Practical Botany for Gardeners

Practical Botany for Gardeners PDF Author: Geoff Hodge
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 022609409X
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 225

Book Description
Gardening can be frustratingly shrouded in secrecy. Fickle plants make seemingly spontaneous decisions to bloom or bust, seeds sprout magically in the blink of an eye, and deep-rooted mysteries unfold underground and out of sight. Understanding basic botany is like unlocking a horticultural code; fortunately learning a little science can reveal the secrets of the botanical universe and shed some light on what’s really going on in your garden. Practical Botany for Gardeners provides an elegant and accessible introduction to the world of botany. It presents the essentials that every gardener needs to know, connecting explanations of scientific facts with useful gardening tips. Flip to the roots section and you’ll not only learn how different types of roots support a plant but also find that adding fungi to soil aids growth. The pruning section both defines “lateral buds” and explains how far back on a shoot to cut in order to propagate them. The book breaks down key areas and terminology with easy-to-navigate chapters arranged by theme, such as plant types, plant parts, inner workings, and external factors. “Great Botanists” and “Botany in Action” boxes delve deeper into the fascinating byways of plant science. This multifaceted book also includes two hundred botanical illustrations and basic diagrams that hearken to the classic roots of botany. Part handbook, part reference, Practical Botany for Gardeners is a beautifully captivating read. It’s a must for garden lovers and backyard botanists who want to grow and nurture their own plant knowledge.

Ancient Oaks in the English Landscape

Ancient Oaks in the English Landscape PDF Author: Aljos Farjon
Publisher: Royal Botanic Gardens Kew
ISBN: 9781842466407
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
England has more ancient native oak trees than the rest of Europe combined. How did that come about? The reasons are all historical, and nothing to do with climate or soil factors. This story goes back to the Norman conquest of England in 1066. They created Royal Forests, chases and deer parks, where only the nobility could hunt or keep deer and it was forbidden to cut the trees. This was, if you like, an early form of nature conservation, but for the sake of privileged hunting. Preservation of these oaks further continued through a combination of private ownership of thousands of parks, conservatism of the landowners, overseas timber availability and the absence of ruining wars on the English landscape; the majority of which had been confined to the continent. Modernisation of forestry in England only took hold after 1920, and by that stage too late to destroy all of the old and worthless hollow trees. In contrast, modern forestry was introduced on the continent at least 200 years earlier, with devastating results for ancient trees. We owe the ancient oaks to all these circumstances which created a unique 'population' of ancient oaks, highly important for biodiversity and an asset unique to England. In this book Aljos Farjon combines history with science and tells the story of how ancient oaks have shaped the English landscape over the past 1000 years. The two native species of oak, pedunculate oak (Quercus robur) and sessile oak (Q. petraea) are among the longest living trees in England. And using data made available by 'citizen science' (data gathered by volunteers across the country) Aljos explains this remarkable situation by giving detailed evidence, enhanced with beautiful images of these stunning oaks as well as graphs and maps.

Remaking a Garden- The Laskett Transformed

Remaking a Garden- The Laskett Transformed PDF Author: Sir Roy Strong
Publisher: Frances Lincoln
ISBN: 9780711233966
Category : Gardens
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
The garden at the Laskett in Herefordshire is always described as the largest formal garden laid out in Britain since the war and one of most important and interesting gardens of the second half of the twentieth century. It was made by Roy Strong and his wife, theatre designer Julia Trevelyan Oman, between 1973 and 2003. In the latter year Roy's book about the garden and how it was made (The Laskett: the story of a garden) was published, Julia died, and Roy started to remake the garden. Remaking a Garden: the Laskett Gardens Transformed is the story of that remaking, told by Roy, with photographs by Clive Boursnell, who has photographed the whole process from the beginning.
