Book Description
SUNY Geneseo participated for the first time in the National Survey of Student Engagement. A sample of freshmen and seniors were asked to complete the College Student Report 2002 either via a paper format or the web. The College's response rate was 50% and freshmen and senior results were compared with three reference groups: Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC), Carnegie Master's Level Schools, and the total NSSE response group. Some notable differences were observed between freshmen and seniors and minor ones among the reference groups.

Engaging University Students

Engaging University Students PDF Author: Hamish Coates

ISBN: 9814585637
Category : Education

Pages : 184

Book Description
This book provides university teachers, leaders and policymakers with evidence on how researchers in several countries are monitoring and improving student engagement—the extent to which students are exposed to and participate in effective educational practices. It captures insights from international implementations of the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), developed in the United States. In the last half decade NSSE has been adapted and used in several other countries, producing the largest international collaboration yet involving educationally relevant data on students’ engagement in higher education. Leaders of established national collaborations draw on their experiences with hundreds of institutions to contribute their insights. Framed by their cultural and educational contexts, they discuss issues concerning first-year learners, international students, part-time and distance learners, as well as teaching and leadership in support of student learning. Each chapter outlines strategies based on national case studies and presents perspectives supported by concrete examples of how these have played out in diverse settings. The book suggests mechanisms that can be used by institutions, ministries and quality agencies around the world.

Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 422

Book Description
Student Success in College describes policies, programs, and practices that a diverse set of institutions have used to enhance student achievement. This book clearly shows the benefits of student learning and educational effectiveness that can be realized when these conditions are present. Based on the Documenting Effective Educational Practice (DEEP) project from the Center for Postsecondary Research at Indiana University, this book provides concrete examples from twenty institutions that other colleges and universities can learn from and adapt to help create a success-oriented campus culture and learning environment.

Validating the National Survey of Student Engagement Against Student Outcomes

Validating the National Survey of Student Engagement Against Student Outcomes PDF Author: Jonathan Gordon

Pages : 36

Book Description
While there exist many examples of institutional use of the results of the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), there is a relative paucity of research explicitly linking student outcomes to responses on the survey. A major Doctoral-Extensive institution in the Southeast recently conducted a large-scale implementation of the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). We have linked multiple years of NSSE responses to several student outcomes: freshman retention, GPA, pursuit of graduate education, and employment outcome upon commencement/degree conferral. Our research finds minimal explanatory power in the NSSE benchmarks for these outcomes. A statistically-derived model from the individual NSSE items shows greater promise, although there are difficulties in replicating the model for previous student cohorts. NSSE Benchmark Models; Scalelets; and Regression Models are appended. (Contains 9 tables and 11 endnotes.).

Bringing the Institution Into Focus

Bringing the Institution Into Focus PDF Author: National Survey of Student Engagement
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : College students
Languages : en
Pages : 48

Book Description
The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) documents dimensions of quality in undergraduate education and provides information and assistance to colleges, universities, and other organizations to improve student learning. Its primary activity is annually surveying college students to assess the extent to which they engage in educational practices associated with high levels of learning and development. In this edition, NSSE shifts the focus of their analyses to the institution (a focus that has always existed in the "Using NSSE Data" section highlighting how selected colleges and universities make use of their NSSE results). As shown herein, the average student's experience can vary considerably from one institution to the next, even among institutions of comparable size or selectivity. NSSE's findings challenge the conventional wisdom that certain characteristics of colleges and universities assure a high-quality educational experience. In addition to examining overall differences in engagement between institutions, NSSE documents the existence of outliers--institutions where student populations at risk for lower levels of engagement are in fact as engaged as their more advantaged counterparts. Such "existence proofs" demonstrate that an institution's performance need not be limited by the students it serves. Based on the findings, the key may well be distinctive institutional cultures that focus attention and energy on maximizing the conditions for student success. In addition to the institution-level analysis, this year's report continues NSSE's exploration of results from their new topical modules, including further analyses of academic advising as well as findings from a new module on students' experiences with information literacy. The reporting of survey results concludes with new findings from the Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE) and the Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE), offering fresh insights into how effective educational practice and effective teaching and learning can be promoted. The Using NSSE Data section of this year's report provides several real-world examples of how colleges and universities are putting findings from the updated NSSE survey to good use. A list of references and resources is included. [For "A Fresh Look at Student Engagement. Annual Results 2013," see ED544450.].

Assessment for Improvement

Book Description
The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) documents dimensions of quality in undergraduate education and provides information and assistance to colleges, universities, and other organizations to improve student learning. Its primary activity is annually surveying college students to assess the extent to which they engage in educational practices associated with high levels of learning and development. This national survey shows that a variety of colleges and universities have shown steady improvement in the quality of undergraduate education, as measured by students' exposure to and involvement in effective educational practices. It details results from a 2009 survey of 360,000 students attending 617 U.S. colleges and universities, and it includes a special look at trends in student engagement at more than 200 of those schools that had four to six year's worth of data going back to 2004. (Contains 9 tables and 9 figures.).
