This book assesses the impact and effectiveness of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa (Maputo Protocol) in 16 state parties. These countries are: Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Eswatini, the Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. Each of the chapters traces the impact that the Protocol has had on the policies, laws, court decisions, civil society activism, and legal education in the particular state. Each chapter also discusses the relationship of the state with the African human rights mechanisms. The book is an update of two prior volumes of essays, titled The impact of the African Charter and the Maputo Protocol in selected African states, published by PULP in 2012 and 2016, and edited by the Centre for Human Rights, Universityof Pretoria (Centre) and Victor Ayeni, respectively. The third edition, focused more narrowly on the Maputo Protocol, appears as the continent marks 20 years since the adoption of the Protocol on 11 July 2003. By 11 July 2023, 54 out of 55 African Union member states (with the exception of Morocco) have become party to the African Charter, and 44 of them have accepted the Maputo Protocol. The book is edited by and contains several chapters by alumni of the Master’s in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa programme of the Centre. The Centre intends to use this research as the basis for a continuously updated database on the impact of the African Charter and Maputo Protocol.

Why do women in most developing countries lag behind men in literacy? Why do women get less schooling than men? This anthology examines the educational decisions that deprive women of an equal education. It assembles the most up-to-date data, organized by region. Each paper links the data with other measures of economic and social development. This approach helps explain the effects different levels of education have on womens' fertility, mortality rates, life expectancy, and income. Also described are the effects of women's education on family welfare. The authors look at family size and women's labor status and earnings. They examine child and maternal health, as well as investments in children's education. Their investigation demonstrates that women with a better education enjoy greater economic growth and provide a more nurturing family life. The World Health Organization's Global Technical Strategy for Malaria 2016- 2030 has been developed with the aim to help countries to reduce the human suffering caused by the world's deadliest mosquito-borne disease. Since the end of the civil conflict in 2002, Sierra Leone has worked hard on rebuilding its health and social system. Although progress has been made in reducing maternal mortality, the number of women who die as a result of complications during pregnancy and/or childbirth is still one of the highest in the world. The high number of pregnant girls and teenage mothers has severe health and social consequences and contributes to the problem of maternal mortality in Sierra Leone. KIT and partners in Sierra Leone and the Netherlands have joined forces with the Government of Sierra Leone to investigate and address teenage pregnancy through knowledge sharing capacity building and the development of interventions. This work is carried out within the Public Private Partnership (PPP) Sierra Leone, one of the programs that make up the MDG5 Meshwork for improving Maternal Health*. This report includes the justification, methodology, results and recommendations of a qualitative study interviewing teenage girls who were pregnant or had been pregnant, and focus group discussions with their peers, elders and leaders in various communities in Moyamba, Kailahun, Kambia and Bo. The report describes the stories of the girls who became pregnant, the reasons for their pregnancy and the consequences of their pregnancy for them, their family and the man/boy who impregnated the girl. These stories were used in the training of health workers and for the development of a community education strategy. The report formulates implications and recommendations for further policy and strategy development for adolescent sexual and reproductive health in Sierra Leone. The latter are also based on the outcomes of a discussion of implications during a dissemination meeting of the results in Sierra Leone. *Part of the knowledge strengthening component of the MDG5 Meshwork Public Private Partnerships Programme for the improvement of Maternal Health in Sierra Leone.

All recent books on international social work mention Africa only briefly and few engage with the broader field of development studies. This book focuses solely on the unique African context engaging with issues relating to social work and development more broadly thus enabling a deeper examination and more complex and nuanced picture to emerge.
