The National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS) is a comprehensive nationwide study conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics to determine how students and their families pay for postsecondary education and to describe some demographic and other characteristics of those enrolled. The study is based on a nationally representative sample of students in postsecondary education, including undergraduate, graduate, and first-professional students at public and private institutions, whether less-than-two-year, two-year, or four-year. Data were available on about 82,000 students, and parents of 18,000 students were selected for a telephone interview. This discussion of survey methodology focuses on: (1) study objectives and design; (2) institution sampling and enlistment; (3) student and parent sampling; (4) institutional records data collection; (5) student and parent surveys; (6) file creation and data analysis; (7) weights and variance estimation; (8) the 1993 NPSAS field test; and (9) a summary and recommendations for survey improvement. This report examines the characteristics of less-than-4-year institutions and the students who attend them. Data are presented on the number and size of less-than-4-year institutions, their educational offerings, types of degrees awarded, and on student demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, attendance costs, and financial aid. Following an introductory chapter, Chapter 2 provides a description of enrollment and program offerings at less-than-4-year institutions using data from the Integrated Postsecondary Data System survey. Chapters 3, 4, and 5 use National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (1987) data to describe students enrolled in less-than-4-year public, private not-for-profit, and private for-profit institutions. The sixth chapter compares students attending the different types of less-than-4-year institutions with those attending 4-year institutions. The seventh and final chapter summarizes the findings of this study. Student characteristics examined are divided into four groups: demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, including sex, age, marital status, dependent student's family income, and independent student's income; educational goals, including ultimate degree objective and field of study; student expenses, including the average amount paid for tuition and fees, housing, transportation, and miscellaneous; and sources and average amounts of financial support. This publication presents statistics that estimate higher education student financial aid for 1992-93 in 12 tables using data from the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS). NPSAS is a comprehensive study that is examining how students and their families pay for postsecondary education. It includes nationally representative samples of undergraduates, graduates, and first-professional students, students attending less-than-two-year, two-year, four-year, and doctoral granting institutions. Tables include information that shows aid for undergraduates by source and student characteristic, by type of aid, average amounts of federal and non-federal aid, graduate and professional students receiving aid and the average amounts of aid they receive. Highlights of the report include: (1) about 40 percent of undergraduates (about 7.7 million) received financial aid from some source; (2) about 1 out of every 3 undergraduates received some type of federal aid and about 2 out of every 10 received federal grants; (3) among the 2.2 million aided undergraduates enrolled at public two-year institutions, the average amount of aid received was about $2,200; (4) among graduate and first-professional students about 4 of every 10 received some financial aid from any source averaging $8,500; and (5) about 75 percent of first-professional program students received aid averaging over $14,500.
