Resistance and Coexistence In Some of Leila Abuolela’s Fictional Works

Resistance and Coexistence In Some of Leila Abuolela’s Fictional Works PDF Author: Doaa Mohamed Anwer Deep
Publisher: Bayan Translation, Publishing & Distribution
ISBN: 9776719023
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 156

Book Description
This book examines three fictional works by the writer Laila Abu Al-Ela, including two novels: “The Translator,” and “The Generosity of the Enemies,” and the other is a short story: the Ostrich. The research proposes the hypothesis that the selected fictional works present a balanced map of human relations through a perspective that calls for coexistence between cultures of multiple races and origins, and does not contradict the concept of resistance to a dominant mono-Western culture. This thesis is divided into an introduction, three chapters, and a conclusion. In the introduction, a simplified presentation of some of the theories influencing the writing of literature, such as the theory of the clash of civilizations by Samuel Huntington, the clash of cultures by Mehdi El-Mandjara and the difference between them are presented. The introduction refers to some examples of individuals and groups recorded in history, in which cultural difference has exposed them to religious and racial discrimination. The conflict in the second half of the twentieth century also led to the redrawing of the cultural conflict, which cast its shadow over the literature industry, thus contributing to the emergence of new types of literature Such as what is called the literature of resistance and the literature of immigrants. The introduction briefly discusses the possibility of finding alternatives to accommodate the differences that resulted from the sharp polarizations, especially in societies that witnessed the largest rate of immigration to them, and the role of Lily Abul-Ela literary works in this field.

Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 323

Book Description
“A richly imagined novel about a half-Russian, half-Sudanese professor whose studies of a 19th-century Muslim leader become a portal into his world.” —Travel + Leisure It’s 2010 and Natasha, a half-Russian, half-Sudanese professor of Islamic studies, is researching the life of Imam Shamil, the nineteenth-century Muslim leader who led the anti-Russian resistance in the Caucasian War. When shy, single Natasha discovers that her star student, Oz, is not only descended from the warrior but also possesses Shamil’s priceless sword, the Imam’s story comes vividly to life. As Natasha’s relationship with Oz and his alluring actress mother intensifies, Natasha is forced to confront issues she had long tried to avoid—that of her Muslim heritage. When Oz is suddenly arrested at his home one morning, Natasha realizes that everything she values stands in jeopardy. Told with Aboulela’s inimitable elegance and narrated from the point of view of both Natasha and the historical characters she is researching, The Kindness of Enemies is both an engrossing story of a provocative period in history and an important examination of what it is to be a Muslim in a post 9/11 world. “A versatile prose stylist . . . [Aboulela is] a voice for multiculturalism.” —The New York Times

The Coming African Hour

The Coming African Hour PDF Author: Luc Sindjoun
Publisher: African Books Collective
ISBN: 0798302305
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 452

Book Description
The Coming African hour is not a slogan, nor wishful thinking. It is a conclusion that derives from an insightful analysis of the current situation pertaining on the continent. Several African scholars, coming from different regions and academic backgrounds are elaborating ideas and arguments in order to explain the constraints and to illustrate the opportunities. The result of that scientific gathering is a book that synthesizes and renews the reflections on development. What is at stake is not to be pessimistic or optimistic about Africa. The epistemological challenge is to understand what is going on. By focusing on converging and diverging African realities, on the issues of state, civil society, gender and development strategies, the authors of the book show under which conditions the African hour is coming. At that level, the commitment for political science meets the commitment for Africa. The main success of this book is to overcome the preconceived ideas and self-fulfilling prophecies about Africa. Here, the analysis avoids the trap of indulgence; then hope is based on truth. Consequently, the coming African hour is not inescapable: it is, as analyzed, a possibility that its achievement depends on institutional, human, political, social and economic factors.
