ISBN: 3905758261
Category : History

Book Description
Women's contributions against apartheid under the auspices of the Namibian liberation movement SWAPO and their personal experiences in exile take center stage in this study. Male and female leadership structures in exile are analysed whilst the sexual politics in the refugee camps and the public imagery of female representation in SWAPO's nationalism receive special attention. The party's public pronouncements of women empowerment and gender equality are compared to the actual implementations of gender politics during and after the liberation struggle.

Justice Not Silence

Justice Not Silence PDF Author: Ezra Chitando
Publisher: AFRICAN SUN MeDIA
ISBN: 1920689001
Category : Religion

Pages : 251

Book Description
The editors of this volume highlight the fact that although the Church often stands up for other public issues such as human rights, democratic political rights, economic justice, etc., sexual and gender-based violence do not receive the attention they deserve. There are no theological or cultural arguments that can justify such a position. Sexual and gender-based violence are a scourge that defies our Christian understanding of human dignity ? and challenges the Church in all its formations to respond. ÿAlthough most of the case studies are from Zimbabwe, they challenge us regardless of which country we are living in ? or the tradition of our specific denomination.ÿ In the context of Southern Africa, where the HIV and AIDS burden is among the highest in the world, sexual and gender-based violence are a major contributor to the spread of the disease. This will only change if the Church challenges this practice as part of its educational and public work ? in theological institutions, in congregations, but also in its pastoral work within families.ÿ

Namibia's Children

Namibia's Children PDF Author: Michaela Fink
Publisher: transcript Verlag
ISBN: 3839456673
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 197

Book Description
Many children in Namibia find themselves facing a social crisis. They have been abandoned or abused, are malnourished, homeless, or live in shacks that barely provide any protection. However, amidst these disastrous living conditions, children have developed remarkable survival skills, and come up with equally clever and disillusioned analyses of their situation. For three years, Michaela Fink and Reimer Gronemeyer conducted interviews in Namibia with women who take care of vulnerable children. The book gives these children a voice in interviews and essays.

Women in Namibia

Women in Namibia PDF Author: Eunice M. Iipinge
Publisher: Southern African Research and Documentation Centre
ISBN:
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 100

Book Description
The Namibia chapter in the Beyond Inequalities series was produced by the University and Namibia and the WIDSAA Programme of SARDC. Gender machinery in Namibia is relatively new, hence the importance of monitoring and evaluating at community and national levels. This publication focuses on the post-Beijing legal reforms in the country. It summarises information on the position of women in Namibia in relation to economic, politics, health, socio-cultural environments and the law. It considers policies formulated by the government of Namibia, with input from NGOs, such as the National Gender Policy, and findings from studies conducted on behalf of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Child Welfare. Overall, the study brings to the fore pertinent issues that require urgent redress with particular regard for poverty, illiteracy, inequality, oppression and HIV/AIDS, outlining recommendations for improvement.
