Introduction to Discrete Mathematics

Introduction to Discrete Mathematics PDF Author: Koo-Guan Choo
Publisher: Longman Publishing Group
ISBN: 9780582800557
Category : Computer science
Languages : en
Pages : 148

Book Description
Discrete Mathematics covers such a wide range of topics that it is difficult to give a simple definition of the subject. Whereas calculus deals with continuous or even smooth objects, discrete mathematics deals with things that come in "chunks" that can be counted. We will be a lot more precise about just what sort of "chunks" we are dealing with in the later chapters. If your mathematical background is only high school calculus you could well believe that mathematics is only about numbers functions and formulas for solving problems. If this is the case, the topics in this book may be quite a surprise because for mathematicians, computer scientists and engineers, Discrete Mathematics includes logic, set theory, enumeration, networks, automata, formal languages and many other discrete structures. That is what this book is about. On the other hand, in 19 lectures we can only present an introduction to the subject and we must leave other important topics such as graph theory, error-correcting codes, discrete probability theory and applications to theoretical computer science to a second or third course. The topics covered are set theory, logic, Boolean algebra, counting, generating functions, recurrence relations, finite automata and formal languages with a lot of emphasis on counting. The set theory and logic is basic material which will be useful many courses besides Discrete Mathematics. Counting problems which look quite hard when stated in ordinary English can often be solved easily when translated into the language of set theory. We give many examples that reduce to counting the number of functions of various types between sets, or counting the number of subsets of a set.

Foundation Mathematics

Foundation Mathematics PDF Author: K.A. Stroud
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 0230366724
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 753

Book Description
This complete entry-level textbook from leading authors gives students the confidence they need to succeed in core mathematics skills in preparation for undergraduate courses in engineering or science, or to build skills to support the mathematical elements of other degree courses. Its unique programmed approach takes students through the mathematics they need in a step-by-step fashion with a wealth of examples and exercises. The text demands that students engage with it by asking them to complete steps that they can manage from previous examples or knowledge they have acquired, while carefully introducing new steps. By working with the authors through the examples, students become proficient as they go. By the time they come to trying examples on their own, confidence is high. The text is aimed at students on Foundation courses in engineering, construction, science and computer science, and for all mathematics courses for students of business studies, psychology, and geography.

Measurements and their Uncertainties

Measurements and their Uncertainties PDF Author: Ifan Hughes
Publisher: OUP Oxford
ISBN: 0191576565
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 152

Book Description
This hands-on guide is primarily intended to be used in undergraduate laboratories in the physical sciences and engineering. It assumes no prior knowledge of statistics. It introduces the necessary concepts where needed, with key points illustrated with worked examples and graphic illustrations. In contrast to traditional mathematical treatments it uses a combination of spreadsheet and calculus-based approaches, suitable as a quick and easy on-the-spot reference. The emphasis throughout is on practical strategies to be adopted in the laboratory. Error analysis is introduced at a level accessible to school leavers, and carried through to research level. Error calculation and propagation is presented though a series of rules-of-thumb, look-up tables and approaches amenable to computer analysis. The general approach uses the chi-square statistic extensively. Particular attention is given to hypothesis testing and extraction of parameters and their uncertainties by fitting mathematical models to experimental data. Routines implemented by most contemporary data analysis packages are analysed and explained. The book finishes with a discussion of advanced fitting strategies and an introduction to Bayesian analysis.
