At eight there was a state dinner, followed by a very pretty ball in a house built on purpose at a cost of 4,000The decorations were, I thought, prettier than any we had seen so far, the foliage of the shrubs and plantain trees, with many flowers, being most effective; and there were, too, fountains playlng in most of the rooms, which gave a cool appearance that was very pleasant. I was not at all well, and suffering with a sore throat, but the dance was so enjoyable that I stayed with the others till 2.30 a.m. when I ought to have gone to bed.
