The Genius of the Roman Rite
Author: Uwe Michael Lang
Publisher: LiturgyTrainingPublications
ISBN: 1618330225
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 269
Book Description
On July 7, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI issued his long awaited motu proprio, Summorum Pontificum. In this document he granted permission "to celebrate Mass following the typical edition of the Roman Missal promulgated by Bl. John XXIII in 1962 as an extraordinary form of the Liturgy of the Church." Because of this motu proprio, there has been much interest in viewing the Paul VI missal as a continuation of the Bl. John XXIII missal. Understanding the earlier ritual expression is essential if we are to deeply understand the ordinary expression of the Mass of Paul VI. This book is a collection essays from the proceedings of the 11th International CIEL (International Centre for Liturgical Studies) Colloquium held at Merton College, Oxford, September of 2006. CIEL is an academic school of Liturgy founded in 1994 in Paris to form an academic school to instruct priests, seminarians, religious and the laity in the riches of Catholic liturgical history and development of the liturgy.

Ever Directed Towards the Lord
Author: Uwe Michael Lang
Publisher: A&C Black
ISBN: 0567031330
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 137
Book Description
The celebration of the liturgy of the Holy Eucharist is one of the central issues in the Roman Catholic Church today. To mark the "Year of the Eucharist", the Society of St. Catherine of Siena held a conference on the Eucharistic liturgy at Oxford in 2005. This book contains the energetic and fruitful reflection of the scholars present at the conference. The contributions are academically demanding yet accessible to a wider audience. The collection does not seek a solution to the current problems, rather it promotes an open discussion about the theological, philosophical and historical issues surrounding the celebration of the liturgy and its future as well as paying attention to the increasing interest in the pre-conciliar rites.

A Sense of the Sacred
Author: James Monti
Publisher: Ignatius Press
ISBN: 1681494280
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 1296
Book Description
This incomparable volume presents a comprehensive exploration and explanation of medieval liturgical celebrations. The reverent prayers, hymns and rubrics used in the Middle Ages are described in detail and interpreted through the commentary of scholars from the same time period, the era which is also known as the "Age of Faith". Collected here is a wide range of ceremonies, encompassing the seven sacraments, the major feasts of the liturgical year (such as Christmas, Easter, and Corpus Christi), and special liturgical rites (from the coronation of the pope to the blessing of expectant mothers). The sacred celebrations have been drawn from countries across western and central Europe-from Portugal to Poland-but particular attention has been given to liturgical texts of medieval Spain, which until now have received relatively little attention from scholars. Historian James Monti has done exhaustive research on medieval liturgical manuscripts, early printed missals, and the writings of medieval liturgists and theologians so that the treasures they contain can inspire a sense of the sacred in future generations of Catholics.
