In representing this melancholy subject, Reynolds has given to his figures an expression of grief that penetrates the soul of the beholder, and agitates it strongly. This picture, which is remarkable with respect to the colouring and expression, is considered as the best performance of that master, who received 10,000 fr. or L. 400, for it, from the Duke of Dorset, at whose seat, at Knowle, it now is. J. Dixon gave a Mezzotinto print of it, in 1774: Raimbach has since engraved it in the Line Manner. Widlh, 5 feet 9 inches; height, 4 feet 1 inch. 9g REMORDS D'ORESTE.

Constantly pursued by Juno, Latona had been obliged to quit the Island of Delos, where she had given birth to her two children, Apollo and Diana. She was crossing Lycia and was overpowered by thirst and fatigue: perceiving a pond whose water seemed clear, she approached to quench her drought. She had already knelt, to drink the more at her ease, when some peasants, who were gatEering reeds in the pond, brutally drove her away and prevented her from...

Haut., to pieds; larg., 8 pieds.__ ITALIAN SCHOOL. RAPHAEL. ROME. '. GALATHiEA. When speaking of Galathaea and of her amours withAcis, and the jealousy felt in consequence by Polyphemus, Ovid says nothing of the Triumph afterwards offered her by the Sea Divinities. But the Italian poets of the XVI century have continued, altered, and varied the fictions of the ancients; it is therefore in reading their works that Raphael conceived the idea of this charming composition, which might be thought to be truly inspired by the sight of some antique painting, so much resemblance does it bear with the style of working of the ancients. Raphael executed this fresco in the palace of Agostino Chigi: it adorns one of the ends of the Gallery where the History of Psyche is painted. No doubt the reader will be curious to see the manner Raphael expressed himself, relative to this picture, in a letter to his friend Balthazar Castiglione. After mentioning that he sends him several designs, he adds: As to the Galathaea, I should consider myself a great master, if there was...

Rene Duguay-thouin was born at Saint-Malo in 1673: his father, an able seaman, made him study at Rennes and at Caen, but his taste and his manners agreed little with the ecclesiastical state, for which he had been destined, and in spite of having received the tonsure, he readily joined a frigate, his family had armed for the war declared against England in 1689. In ifiyi, his family trusted him with the command of a frigate; and in 169, while Tourville was Gghting the unfortunate battle of the Hague, Duguay-Trouin, took on the englishcoast, two vessels which were convoying thirty merchantmen. In 1694, when commanding a frigate, he defended himself obstinately against six vessels; but wounded at last, aud insensible, he was carried into Plymouth. Having returned to France, and at the age only of twentyone years, he again attacked two vessels and compelled them to submit; and insisted upon the captain, giving him the commissions belonging to Jean Bart and de Forbin, ...

Book Description
Bruce Redford re-creates the vibrant culture of connoisseurship in Enlightenment England by investigating the multifaceted activities and achievements of the Society of Dilettani. Elegantly and wittily he dissects the British connoisseurs whose expeditions, collections, and publications laid the groundwork for the Neoclassical revival and for the scholarly study of Graeco-Roman antiquity. After the foundation of the society in 1732, the Dilettani commissioned portraits of the members. Including a striking group of mock-classical and mock-religious representations, these portraits were painted by George Knapton, Sir Joshua Reynolds, and Sir Thomas Lawrence. During the second half of the century, the society’s expeditions to the Levant yielded a series of pioneering architectural folios, beginning with the first volume The Antiquities of Athens in 1762. These monumental volumes aspired to empirical exactitude in text and image alike. They prepared the way for Specimens of Antient Sculpture (1809), which combines the didactic (detailed investigations into technique, condition, restoration, and provenance) with the connoisseurial (plates that bring the illustration of ancient sculpture to new artistic heights). The Society of Dilettanti’s projects and publications exemplify the Enlightenment ideal of the gentleman amateur, which is linked in turn to a culture of wide-ranging curiosity.
