Murphy's Law: The 26th Anniversary Edition

Murphy's Law: The 26th Anniversary Edition PDF Author: Arthur Bloch
Publisher: Penguin
ISBN: 1101663758
Category : Humor
Languages : en
Pages : 232

Book Description
For more than a quarter of a century, Murphy's Law has provided the last word on things going wrong. Positive thinking is all very fine when the world is treating you right, but when things go awry, it's Murphy's Law that comes up with the goods-the pithy revelations and undeniable truths that document our limitless potential for misplaced insight, hopeless wit, and pessimistic wisdom. This special anniversary collection features the best of Murphy's Law--plus new 21st-century entries proving that with advances in technology, even more can go wrong. For example: No matter what goes wrong, there is always somebody who knew it would. Anything is easier to take apart than to put together. For every action, there is an equal and opposite criticism. The less you do, the less can go wrong. Everybody lies, but it doesn't matter since nobody listens.

John Law

John Law PDF Author: Antoin E. Murphy
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 9780198286493
Category : Capitalists and financiers
Languages : en
Pages : 428

Book Description
John Law (1671-1729) left a remarkable legacy of economic concepts from a time when economic conceptualization was very much at an embryonic stage. Yet he is best known-and generally dismissed-today as a rake, duellist, and gambler. This intellectual biography offers a new approach to Law, one that shows him to have been a significant economic theorist with a vision that he attempted to implement as policy in early-eighteenth-century Europe. Law's style, marked by a clarity and use of modern terminology, stands out starkly against the turgid prose of many of his contemporaries. His vision of a monetary and financial system was certainly one of a later age, for Law believed in an economy of banknotes and credit where specie had no role to play. Ultimately Law failed as a policy-maker, in part because of the entrenchment of the financiers and their aristocratic backers and in part because of theoretical flaws in his vision. His struggle for power took place against the background of Europe's first major stock boom and collapse. The collapse of the Mississippi System, which he had conceived, and the South Sea Bubble led to a lasting impression of Law as a failure. It is this impression that Antoin Murphy seeks to dispel.

The Myth of Ownership

The Myth of Ownership PDF Author: Liam B. Murphy
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN: 0195176561
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 239

Book Description
In a capitalist economy, taxes are more than a method of payment for government and public services. They are the most significant instrument by which the political system puts into practice a conception of economic justice. Yet there has been little effort to bring together important recent philosophical work on justice with vigorous debates about tax policy going on in national politics and public policy circles, in economics and law. The Myth of Ownership bridges this gap, offering the first book to explore tax policy from the standpoint of contemporary moral and political philosophy. Book jacket.

International Law Relating to Islands

International Law Relating to Islands PDF Author: Sean D. Murphy
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004361545
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 383

Book Description
This monograph considers the application of general rules of international law to islands, as well as special rules focused on islands, notably Article 121 of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Such rules have been applied in several landmark cases in recent years, including the International Court of Justice’s judgments in Territorial and Maritime Dispute (Nicaragua v. Colombia), and arbitral awards in the Chagos Marine Protected Area Arbitration (Mauritius v. United Kingdom) and the South China Sea Arbitration (Philippines v. China). Among other things, this monograph explores: the legal concepts of “islands”, “rocks” and “low-tide elevations”; methods of securing sovereignty over and the maritime zones generated by islands; islands and historic titles, bays and rights; problems of delimitation in the presence of islands; legal issues arising from changes in islands over time (notably from climate change); and contemporary techniques for resolving disputes over islands.
