Muons

Muons PDF Author: J. Caparthy
Publisher: Nova Publishers
ISBN: 9781594541759
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 264

Book Description
Since its discovery in cosmic rays, the muon has played an important role in our understanding of nature. Muons are fundamental subatomic particle 207 times heavier than an electron. Accelerators and cosmic-ray collisions produce muons, but the particles quickly decay. That makes muons rare in nature. Muons possess a quantum mechanical property called spin, analogous to the twirling of a top. Because of this trait, muons behave like tiny bar magnets. Their spin also makes them into minute gyroscopes, responding to upward or downward forces by swinging the axes of spin around horizontally. The muon provides a rich variety of applications in diverse areas of science, including condensed matter physics and chemistry. High energy physicists are seriously considering the design and construction of a muon collider. Negatively misbehaving muons bolster earlier evidence of new physics beyond the standard model. Important international leading-edge research results are presented in this volume.

Induced Effects in Beta Decay and Muon Capture

Induced Effects in Beta Decay and Muon Capture PDF Author: J. N. Huffaker

Book Description
In order to facilitate analysis of muon capture in 16O, results are presented of a shell-model calculation of low-lying odd-parity states of 16O and 16N, including the effects of a two-particle spin-orbit interaction. Calculated energy levels and rates for various beta-decay and muon-capture transitions are given as functions of the spin-orbit interaction strength. Formulas are obtained for single-level muon-capture rates for the following transitions: 12C(0+) 12B(1+); 16O(0+) to 16N(0- ); 16O(0+) to 16N(1- ); and 16O(0+) to 16N(2- ). The formulas include effects of finite nuclear size and relativistic treatment of the muon, and are presented in a form showing explicit dependence on induced form factors and on configuration-mixing coefficients for the various nuclear levels. Electron radial wave functions suitable for beta-decay calculations involving light elements (Z

Collective Motion and Phase Transitions in Nuclear Systems

Collective Motion and Phase Transitions in Nuclear Systems PDF Author: A. A. Raduta
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9812770410
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 690

Book Description
This volume contains the invited contributions that were presented at the Predeal International Summer School in Nuclear Physics 2006. It covers the recent achievements in the fields of nuclear structure, double beta decay, nuclear multifragmentation, kaon and dilepton production in heavy ion collisions, and the quarkOCogluon plasma. The treatment is both theoretical and experimental, with emphasis on the collective aspects and related phase transitions. The papers are authored by many leading researchers in the field."

Neutrino Mass

Neutrino Mass PDF Author: Guido Altarelli
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3540449019
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Reviews the current state of knowledge of neutrino masses and the related question of neutrino oscillations. After an overview of the theory of neutrino masses and mixings, detailed accounts are given of the laboratory limits on neutrino masses, astrophysical and cosmological constraints on those masses, experimental results on neutrino oscillations, the theoretical interpretation of those results, and theoretical models of neutrino masses and mixings. The book concludes with an examination of the potential of long-baseline experiments. This is an essential reference text for workers in elementary-particle physics, nuclear physics, and astrophysics.

Exotic Nuclei and Nuclear/particle Astrophysics

Exotic Nuclei and Nuclear/particle Astrophysics PDF Author: S. Stoica
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9812700072
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 510

Book Description
This volume documents an important event in the World Year of Physics 2005 and a continuation of the traditional international summer schools that have taken place in Romania regularly since 1964. On one hand, the study of exotic nuclei seeks answers about the structure and interaction of unique finite quantum mechanical many-body systems. On the other, it provides data that have an impact on the understanding of the origin of the elements in the Universe. The contributions, written by outstanding professors from prestigious research centers over the world, provide the reader with both comprehensive reviews and the most recent results in the field. Large experimental facilities are discussed together with future research projects. The book offers insights into how experiments in terrestrial nuclear physics laboratories may be combined with observations in outer space to enlarge our basic knowledge.

On Ion Probes and Traps

On Ion Probes and Traps PDF Author: Matthew Piron Green

Book Description
The Enriched Xenon Observatory seeks to measure neutrino mass through observation of neutrinoless double beta decay. A new generation of ton-scale experiments are being developed, which aim to probe neutrinoless double beta decay half-lives on the order of 10^27 - 10^28 years. The keys to reaching these sensitivities are large source mass and reduction of radioactive backgrounds; this thesis details efforts to develop a system for tagging the 136-Ba+ daughter of the double beta decay of 136-Xe, for the purposes of background elimination in a large experiment.
