Book Description
This report describes the results of a program of research on the thermochemistry, spectroscopy and intramolecular relaxation dynamics of the combustion intermediate, HCO. We prepare this radical from acetaldehyde as a photo-precursor in a differentially pumped laser-ionization source quadrupole mass spectrometer. Using a multiresonant spectroscopic technique established in our laboratory, we select individual rotational states and overcome Franck-Condon barriers associated with neutral-to-cation geometry changes to promote transitions to individual autoionizing series and state-resolved ionization thresholds. Systematic analysis of rotational structure and associated lineshapes provide experimental insight on autoionization dynamics as input for theoretical modeling. Extrapolation of series, combined with direct threshold-photoelectron detection, yield precise ionization potentials that constitute an important contribution to the thermochemical base of information on HCO.

Methods of Laser Spectroscopy

Methods of Laser Spectroscopy PDF Author: Yehiam Prior
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461594596
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 482

Book Description
The Fritz Haber Symposium on Methods of Laser Spectroscopy was held in Ein Bokek, Israel, on the shores of the Dead Sea, on December 16-20, 1985. The location is the lowest place on earth, 392 meters below sea level. It was hoped that 120 active laser scientists, so lowly trapped in such a place, with the nearest entertainment 100 km away, will have no choice but to discuss laser spectroscopy. On the average, the Dead Sea area receives 3-4 days of rain each year, and this year these days all occurred during the conference. This did not mean the cancellation of the hikes, although the trip to Massada was conducted in the rain. The unexpected rains also caused flash floods in the area, and Ein Bokek was completely cut-off on Thursday night. The archeologist scheduled to speak after dinner, and the belly dancer scheduled to appear afterwards, (~ould not arrive, resulting in the only serious deviation from the original plan. The scientific program consisted of invited talks and contributed posters. The emphasis in selection of invited speakers and topics was on the methods rather than specific molecular systems, and an attempt was made to allow ample time for discussion after each lecture. The same philosophy guided us in editing this book, and authors were requested to write manuscripts longer than usual for standard conference proceedings.

The Determinate World

The Determinate World PDF Author: David Jalal Hyder
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter
ISBN: 3110183919
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 239

Book Description
This book offers a new interpretation of Hermann von Helmholtz's work on the epistemology of geometry. A detailed analysis of the philosophical arguments of Helmholtz's Erhaltung der Kraft shows that he took physical theories to be constrained by a regulative ideal. They must render nature "completely comprehensible", which implies that all physical magnitudes must be relations among empirically given phenomena. This conviction eventually forced Helmholtz to explain how geometry itself could be so construed. Hyder shows how Helmholtz answered this question by drawing on the theory of magnitudes developed in his research on the colour-space. He argues against the dominant interpretation of Helmholtz's work by suggesting that for the latter, it is less the inductive character of geometry that makes it empirical, and rather the regulative requirement that the system of natural science be empirically closed.

Surface Photochemistry

Surface Photochemistry PDF Author: Masakazu Anpo
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN:
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 200

Book Description
This first volume in the series brings together the latest developments in solid surface photochemistry, providing insights into the most up to date research activities on light-initiated chemical reactions. The book offers a comprehensive study of the photochemical and photophysical properties of molecules on various surfaces like zeolites, metals and metal oxides. Chapter 1 discusses the nature of the photochemical and photophysical reactions occurring on solid surfaces. Subsequent chapters deal with a description of the dynamical aspects of surface photohemistry, a study of the specific nature of photochemistry of molecules included within zeolite cavities and a comprehensive study of the reactivities of photo-generated electron-hole pair states involved in photo-induced and photocatalytic reactions. The book also investigates many possible and actual key applications of solid surface photochemistry, such as molecular photo-devices, photo-chemical vapour deposition of thin layered semiconductors, sensitive optical media and control of photochemical reaction paths as well as efficient photocatalytic reaction processes which will be indispensable for ecologically clean and safe chemical systems. Surface Photochemistry will be of interest to researchers in surface science and also to graduate students interested in catalysis or photo-chemistry. It will be valuable as a reference book for academics in many aspects of materials science.
