Book Description
This research effort was focused on three major areas of further research and development of the Multipurpose Arcade Combat Simulator (MACS): (1) hardware modifications of the MACS M16A1 rifle and its component parts; (2) software development for Advanced Rifle Marksmanship (ARM) skills with the M16A1 rifle; and (3) evaluation and refinement of existing MACS Basic Rifle Marksmanship (BRM) programs. Hardware modifications involved improvements to the light pen, light pen mount, and trigger switch. Development of MACS software programs involved the Light Antitank Weapon (LAW), trigger squeeze, and ARM. A major redesign of the BRM diagnostics program was completed.

Multipurpose Arcade Combat Simulator (MACS) Year Three Report

Multipurpose Arcade Combat Simulator (MACS) Year Three Report PDF Author: Jon P. Hunt

Languages : en
Pages : 58

Book Description
This report details research conducted on the Multipurpose Arcade Combat Simulator (MACS) system during the third year of a three-year system development contract. The MACS system is a low-cost, computer-based, part-task weapons trainer that was initially developed to facilitate the teaching of rifle marksmanship, but has the potential to train soldiers on other weapons. It comprises a weapon (e.g., an M16 rifle) with a light pen attached to the barrel and a Commodore 64 computer. Targets are displayed on the computer screen at specified ranges; the user may zero the weapon and then practice marksmanship. Diagnostic feedback is provided. The system has been validated as a teaching device. Research in the third year of the contract has focused on software development in four areas: (1) a 10-level Basic Rifle Marksmanship (BRM) cartridge, (2) an 8-level Advanced Rifle Marksmanship (ARM) cartridge, (3) preliminary development of a cartridge for unit rifle marksmanship training, and (4) development of a program for the M136 anti-armor weapon (AT-4). In addition, minor software modifications were made to the system's demonstration program. Keywords: Flow charting, Computer program documentation, Computer architecture. (kr).

Book Description
The Multipurpose Arcade Combat Simulator (MACS) system is a low-cost, part-task weapons trainer that has been validated as a teaching device with entry-level soldiers. The system may be used for preparatory, basic, sustainment, and remedial training. The PC Version of MACS requires the following equipment and components: M16 rifle with a light pen attached to the barrel; IMB-AT-compatible computer, keyboard, and high resolution color monitor; PXL-380 high resolution light pen board; EGA color graphics board; and the PC Version of the MACS Basic Rifle Marksmanship (BRM) program. MACS allows soldiers to practice BRM skills by firing at targets at scaled ranges displayed on the computer screen. Diagnostic feedback is provided on the screen. The PC Version of the BRM program is comparable to the Commodore version of the BRM program. Both are intended to provide part-task training in BRM. The Trainer's Guide for the PC Version of BRM is intended to accompany each MACS PC Version assembly kit. The guide provides instructions for assembly of the MACS system, using the menu, aligning the light pen, and an extensive description of the BRM program. Keywords: Menu, Troubleshooting, Gunnery trainers. (KR).

Basic Rifle Marksmanship Training with the Laser Marksmanship Training System

Basic Rifle Marksmanship Training with the Laser Marksmanship Training System PDF Author: Joseph D. Hagman

Book Description
"This research compared the relative impact of two approaches for training Basic Rifle Marksmanship (BRM). One hundred and eighty four One-Station Unit Training (OSUT) infantry trainees (i.e., the experimental group) trained under a U.S. Army Reserve (USAR)-developed, device-based (i.e., the Beamhit Laser Marksmanship Training System LMTS) approach, and 202 infantry trainees (i.e., the control group) trained under the standard U.S. Army Infantry School BRM program of instruction. Results revealed that the experimental group outperformed the control group on shot grouping, weapon zeroing, and known-distance firing. No between-group differences were found, however, for record fire qualification scores or for performance during pop-up target engagement practice periods leading up to qualification. The implications of these findings for initial marksmanship training are discussed along with plans for follow-up USAR-sponsored research to assess (a) the impact of LMTS-based training on sustainment performance, and (b) the feasibility of using LMTS-based performance to predict live-fire qualification scores."--Stinet.
