C'est pourquoi nous pensons que les activités de préparation et d'introduction de cette notion doivent être choisies avec le plus grand soin pour amener les élèves à s'approprier la difficile définition du quotient comme nombre dont le produit par b vaut a. Face à des propositions des manuels scolaires pour la plupart insatisfaisantes, nous nous sommes donc demandés comment préparer ce passage à la fraction comme quotient de telle sorte qu'il apparaisse aux élèves le plus naturellement possible ? Notre postulat est que, dès le début de la classe de 6ème et en amont de la notion de fraction comme quotient, il faudrait : réactiver la fraction comme partage et le repérage de fraction sur la demi-droite graduée ; approfondir la définition du quotient décimal : formulations différentes, multiplication à trous, lien entre multiplication et division, distinction valeur approchée et valeur exacte ; prévoir une activité d'introduction qui soit le prolongement « naturel » de ces travaux.
