Book Description
Intermodal freight transport has been discussed for decades as an alternative to unimodal road transport. However, it still does not represent a significant portion of the total freight market. A new and promising possibility to improve the performance of freight systems is the synchromodal design of hinterland transport systems. A cornerstone for synchromodality is an integrated view in the design and operation of intermodal transport. A main benefit of this integrated view is an improved flexibility in mode choice in hinterland transport. This paper gives a detailed description of this integrated view for synchromodal freight transport. Based on this description, a mathematical model for designing service schedules for synchromodal freight transport systems is also presented. The benefits of providing integrated transport services compared to separately planned transport services are also discussed for a case in the hinterland network of the Port of Rotterdam.

Optimisation in Synchromodal Logistics

Optimisation in Synchromodal Logistics PDF Author: Frank Phillipson
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3031156552
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 297

Book Description
This book introduces the advances in synchromodal logistics and provides a framework to classify various optimisation problems in this field. It explores the application of this framework to solve a broad range of problems, such as problems with and without a central decision-maker, problems with and without full information, deterministic problems, problems coping with uncertainty, optimisation of a full network design problem. It covers theoretical constructs, such as discrete optimisation, robust optimisation, optimisation under uncertainty, multi-objective optimisation and agent based equilibrium models. Moreover, practical elaborated use cases are presented to deepen understanding. The book gives both researchers and practitioners a good overview of the field of synchromodal optimisation problems and offers the reader practical methods for modelling and problem-solving.

Schedule-Based Modeling of Transportation Networks

Schedule-Based Modeling of Transportation Networks PDF Author: Nigel H. M. Wilson
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 0387848126
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 319

Book Description
"Schedule-Based Modeling of Transportation Networks: Theory and Applications" follows the book Schedule-Based Dynamic Transit Modeling, published in this series in 2004, recognizing the critical role that schedules play in transportation systems. Conceived for the simulation of transit systems, in the last few years the schedule-based approach has been expanded and applied to operational planning of other transportation schedule services besides mass transit, e.g. freight transport. This innovative approach allows forecasting the evolution over time of the on-board loads on the services and their time-varying performance, using credible user behavioral hypotheses. It opens new frontiers in transportation modeling to support network design, timetable setting, and investigation of congestion effects, as well as the assessment of such new technologies, such as users system information (ITS technologies).

Modelling of the Interaction of the Different Vehicles and Various Transport Modes

Modelling of the Interaction of the Different Vehicles and Various Transport Modes PDF Author: Aleksander Sładkowski
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3030115127
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 535

Book Description
This book discusses various issues of modeling freight and passenger traffic, and explores the common approaches and regional differences. The latter may be a consequence of national legislation or the various approaches that are adopted by scientists around the globe. It focuses on the organization of transcontinental transport and aspects of planning and harmonizing the movement of various transport means, particularly intermodal and multimodal transport. New approaches to the prediction of transportation needs are also considered. Written by international experts, the book is divided into 2 parts: the first part analyzes passenger transport, while the second addresses freight transport. It is intended wide audience, including university professors, graduate and Ph.D. students; transport professionals, and logistics specialist.

International Encyclopedia of Transportation

International Encyclopedia of Transportation PDF Author:
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0081026722
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 4418

Book Description
In an increasingly globalised world, despite reductions in costs and time, transportation has become even more important as a facilitator of economic and human interaction; this is reflected in technical advances in transportation systems, increasing interest in how transportation interacts with society and the need to provide novel approaches to understanding its impacts. This has become particularly acute with the impact that Covid-19 has had on transportation across the world, at local, national and international levels. Encyclopedia of Transportation, Seven Volume Set - containing almost 600 articles - brings a cross-cutting and integrated approach to all aspects of transportation from a variety of interdisciplinary fields including engineering, operations research, economics, geography and sociology in order to understand the changes taking place. Emphasising the interaction between these different aspects of research, it offers new solutions to modern-day problems related to transportation. Each of its nine sections is based around familiar themes, but brings together the views of experts from different disciplinary perspectives. Each section is edited by a subject expert who has commissioned articles from a range of authors representing different disciplines, different parts of the world and different social perspectives. The nine sections are structured around the following themes: Transport Modes; Freight Transport and Logistics; Transport Safety and Security; Transport Economics; Traffic Management; Transport Modelling and Data Management; Transport Policy and Planning; Transport Psychology; Sustainability and Health Issues in Transportation. Some articles provide a technical introduction to a topic whilst others provide a bridge between topics or a more future-oriented view of new research areas or challenges. The end result is a reference work that offers researchers and practitioners new approaches, new ways of thinking and novel solutions to problems. All-encompassing and expertly authored, this outstanding reference work will be essential reading for all students and researchers interested in transportation and its global impact in what is a very uncertain world. Provides a forward looking and integrated approach to transportation Updated with future technological impacts, such as self-driving vehicles, cyber-physical systems and big data analytics Includes comprehensive coverage Presents a worldwide approach, including sets of comparative studies and applications
