This research investigated the effectiveness and quality of environments for educational facilities that serve visually impaired individuals, and proposes that a facility designed entirely for multi-sensory environments will improve the outcomes of the educational program. Specifically, this study develops an educational facility for individuals who are visually impaired who were once sighted. The project is based on the assumption that multi-sensory environments, integral to the architectural design of the facility will facilitate training individuals who have lost their sight due to an accident or illness. Multi-sensory architectural design has the ability to serve a deeper function by acknowledging the feelings, desires and pleasurable capacities of the occupants and providing stimulating and engaging experiences. A goal of this study is to investigate how architecture can help to define the complex relationships between people and built space and transform one's daily existence and offer a higher quality of life. Senses are the way an individual perceives the world, and the essence of an emotional response is the impact an object or space has on our primary senses; sight, sound, taste, smell and touch. In addition to the five primary senses, there are also subtle senses not commonly explored in daily experience. For a visually impaired person, a sense of pressure, balancey rhythrny movement, and warmth and even a sense of self could prove to contribute significantly to the experience of an architectural setting. They provide the opportunity to identify where we are, offering the primary source of information about the world. The most common strategy to investigate, appreciate and experience architecture is primarily from a visual perspective. An experience is typically described with reference to our eyes; we describe how it looks, rather than how it feels, smells, and sounds. However, a physical environment provides the opportunity to stimulate all senses, by manipulating the space to provide different experiences. For example, the perception of a room can be altered by adapting how it looks, how it sounds, how it smells and what it feels like.

This dissertation explores architecture as a pleasant multi-sensory experience for the visually impaired in an urban-rural setting. The study is grounded on the interests of empowerment, independence, social integration in this context, as well as the high unemployment issue of the blind and visually impaired in South Africa. Vision impairment is the highest of all disabilities in South Africa (32%). Furthermore, it was reported by the World Health Organization, in 2018, that 97% of all visually impaired people in the country are unemployed. Sight is considered the most important sense in the human body, especially in this world where architecture has mainly been a visual medium and art. The moment sight is lost, tactility, taste, smell, and the auditory perception become currency for the visually impaired. These are vital determinants of how the blind interact with and navigate architecture. The investigation therefore contains an investigation of the use of the senses in architecture, and how designers can understand, interpret, and contribute to a visually impaired person's interaction with and experience of architecture. The research is based on a mixed-method approach in order to determine an appropriate architecture that is multi-sensory, well suited to provide tools for empowerment and independence, with the aim of giving the visually impaired upward mobility in a world mainly designed for those with sight. The research concludes with an appropriate response to designing for visually impaired people. Conclusions are drawn and a design brief for a multi-sensory creative hub for the visually impaired is derived.

An investigation of the effects of blindness and other types of visual deficit on cognitive abilities. Can a blind person see? The very idea seems paradoxical. And yet, if we conceive of "seeing" as the ability to generate internal mental representations that may contain visual details, the idea of blind vision becomes a concept subject to investigation. In this book, Zaira Cattaneo and Tomaso Vecchi examine the effects of blindness and other types of visual deficit on the development and functioning of the human cognitive system. Drawing on behavioral and neurophysiological data, Cattaneo and Vecchi analyze research on mental imagery, spatial cognition, and compensatory mechanisms at the sensorial, cognitive, and cortical levels in individuals with complete or profound visual impairment. They find that our brain does not need our eyes to "see." Cattaneo and Vecchi address critical questions of broad importance: the relationship of visual perception to imagery and working memory and the extent to which mental imagery depends on normal vision; the functional and neural relationships between vision and the other senses; the specific aspects of the visual experience that are crucial to cognitive development or specific cognitive mechanisms; and the extraordinary plasticity of the brain—as illustrated by the way that, in the blind, the visual cortex may be reorganized to support other perceptual or cognitive funtions. In the absence of vision, the other senses work as functional substitutes and are often improved. With Blind Vision, Cattaneo and Vecchi take on the "tyranny of the visual," pointing to the importance of the other senses in cognition.
