The traditional finishings (korvais) which are normally played three times, generally, have a perfect centering. It means that they start at the beginning of a rhythmic cycle (thala avartam) and conclude at the end of a cycle. Whereas, the uniqueness of this book is it presents ‘Naturals’ i,e,. all 40 numbers (korvais) are naturally formed and framed so aesthetically, with no centering unlike traditional korvais. In this book, korvais are presented in four famous rhythmic cycles which are commonly used in South Indian classical percussion, namely: 1. Adi Thalam (4) – 32 counts per cycle 2. Rupaka Thalam (3) – 12 counts per cycle 3. MisraChapu Thalam (7) – 14 counts per cycle 4. KhandaChapu Thalam (5) – 10 counts per cycle The above names are from the South Indian percussion language. All the korvais are consistently designed to the counts mentioned above, which becomes clear in the numerical notation. I also made it easy to understand by presenting each korvai in four different formats viz. a. Recitation / Konnakol – the verbal rhythm b. Playing – the fingering format for the students c.
