James McNeill Whistler was a leading figure in the revival of lithography in the late 19th century. His lithographs focus upon scenes and themes earlier explored in his paintings, etchings, and pastels. Using transfer paper, he created the effects of drawing, and with a few lines was able to convey a total picture. Working with the London printer Thomas Way and his son T. R. Way, Whistler initially hoped the lithographs would bring him a mass audience and financial security; later he hoped connoisseurs would collect his quiet, understated images as precious objects of enduring value. Steven Block began assembling his important collection in the late 1970s. It includes early experiments, portraits of friends and family, studio models, shop and street scenes, and sketches of the Thames and its bridges.

PUBLISHER'S NOTE TO THE FIFTH EDITION Mr. And Mrs. Pennell's authorised Life of James McNeill Whistler appeared in two volumes in October 1908, and has had to be reprinted in that form three times since then. Its sale even in that comparatively expensive form has been an unexpectedly large one, proving without doubt that interest in Whistler's life is alive and growing. During the three years since its first publication much new material has come into the hands of the authors, and a complete revision of the book has therefore become necessary. The present volume is, to all intents and purposes, a new one. Many of the older illustrations in the earlier editions have been superseded by new ones, a number of which are reproduced for the first time. It is their desire to lead others, to whom his art has hitherto been unfamiliar or incomprehensible, to a study which cannot fail to be a source of delight. The book was begun some two and a half years ago, but was put aside for a time; and when taken up again, it was with the intention of laying it before Mr. Whistler as a slight testimony of the writers' admiration for his genius. His sudden death, however, which occurred while the proofs were passing through the press, prevented the fulfilment of this intention.
