Excerpt from The Right Hon. H. H. Asquith, M. P: A Biography and Appreciation IN this brief sketch of Mr. Asquith, the author has aimed at a portrayal of the man, of the politician, and has sought to emphasise the persistency of the qualities which, first appearing in the child and the undergraduate, are seen to-day in the statesman. The privacies of life have been respected, as, in a biography of a living subject, they should be. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Empire in Arms Our Prime Minister, Mr. Asquith, has said that we have gone into this war in defence of our own honour and to uphold the public law of Europe. That is undoubtedly true, but there is even more than these involved in this struggle, the greatest that the world has ever known. The very existence of our Empire is in issue, and that issue will be decided on the battlefields of Europe. Our great Dominions have realised the momentous character of the issue, and they are sending to us their best in men and material to lighten the titanic burden that is falling on the Motherland. They awakened early to a sense of duty, and Canada was foremost in the coming. Verily one is proud to be a Canadian. This is Canada first in reality. Book Description
Excerpt from The Price of Home Rule Mr. Asquith's declaration with regard to Home Rule, made on December loth, 1909, revived an issue which, so far as England is concerned, had lain almost dormant since 1893, although the question never slept in Ireland. The immediate effects of that declaration were two. One was to engage the Irish Roman Catholic vote in this island to the Liberal cause; the other, to rouse Ulster, which is Loyal Ireland, to a sense of her danger. As regards English people, the moral of the situation was, and is, the fact that the Prime Minister deliberately proposed to concede the demands of the Nationalist party in Ireland, in return for their help in abolishing the veto (as it is called) of the House of Lords. Book Description
Excerpt from Once on a Time This book was written in 1915, for the amusement of my wife and myself at a time when life was not very amusing; it was published at the end of 1917; was reviewed, if at all, as one of a parcel, by some brisk uncle from the Tiny Tots Department; and died quietly, without seriously detracting from the interest which was being taken in the World War, then in progress.
