Book Description
Excerpt from Morris's Grammar: A Philosophical and Practical Grammar of the English Language Dialogically The press of several States have discussed it, and hundreds of teachers are employed in instructing classes in its lessons. Without intending to decide absolutely upon its comparative merits, as a text-book in our schools, we do intend to declare that it is most worthy of the serious attention and careful investigation of scholars and teachers everywhere. The Preface, under ten different titles, is a penetrating, scathing criticism upon our "Common Grammars" in general, abounding in suggestive illustrations and observations. These various titles are ably and instructively discussed in the light of the motto, that "experience is the best teacher," and "demonstration is the best proof." There is a sound criticism upon the Preposition, and a killing one on the Neuter Gender. We have neither time nor space to do this strikingly original and suggestive book justice. A complete analysis would require a treatise on grammar. The subject is an important one, and Prof. Morris has, at least, the merit of having made progress in the philosophy of his interesting and important science and art. Without intending an unqualified approval of all its innovations and suggestions, we are at a loss to point out its errors, if it has any, and are persuaded it will stand the test of a severer criticism than that of a newspaper - that of time. It is the result of much labor and research, and the learned author invites investigation. Prof. I. J. Morris is a native of South Carolina, and an adopted citizen of Alabama. Let the South do his work justice. We heartily commend the book to teachers and scholars everywhere. "The result of his extensive labor has been the production of a more simplified Grammar of the English language, which enables the teacher to impart a thorough practical knowledge of the whole subject to pupils of all ages in a very short time. "Prof. Morris had a class of boys from eleven to thirteen years of age, most of whom knew very little, if any thing, of grammar, when he took them in hand; and who had been under instruction but thirty hours when they were brought on the stand for examination before the Assembly of the Normal School-rooms, New York. Their promptitude and intelligence, when called on to reply by the ablest teachers of the old system, were truly surprising, and carried conviction to every unbiased mind in favor of the new system. "The interest that has been awakened in New York in Prof. Morris's new work seems likely to lead to the happiest results. Indeed, no one can peruse Prof. Morris's Grammar with any degree of attention without being impressed by the profound analytical powers of the author." Language Between Description and Prescription

Language Between Description and Prescription PDF Author: Lieselotte Anderwald
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0190624663
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 353

Book Description
Language Between Description and Prescription is an empirical, quantitative and qualitative study of nineteenth-century English grammar writing, and of nineteenth-century language change. Based on 258 grammar books from Britain and North America, the book investigates whether grammar writers of the time noticed the language changing around them, and how they reacted. In particular, Lieselotte Anderwald demonstrates that not all features undergoing change were noticed in the first place, those that were noticed were not necessarily criticized, and some recessive features were not upheld as correct. The features investigated come from the verb phrase and include in particular variable past tense forms, which -although noticed-often went uncommented, and where variation was acknowledged; the decline of the be-perfect, where the older form (the be-perfect) was criticized emphatically, and corrected; the rise of the progressive, which was embraced enthusiastically, and which was even upheld as a symbol of national superiority, at least in Britain; the rise of the progressive passive, which was one of the most violently hated constructions of the time, and the rise of the get-passive, which was only rarely commented on, and even more rarely in negative terms. Throughout the book, nineteenth-century grammarians are given a voice, and the discussions in grammar books of the time are portrayed. The book's quantitative approach makes it possible to examine majority and minority positions in the discourse community of nineteenth-century grammar writers, and the changes in accepted opinion over time. The terms of the debate are also investigated, and linked to the wider cultural climate of the time. Although grammar writing in the nineteenth century was very openly prescriptivist, the studies in this book show that many prescriptive dicta contained interesting grains of descriptive detail, and that eventually prescriptivism had only a small-scale, short-term effect on the actual language used.
