Ticks

Ticks PDF Author: Alan S. Bowman
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1107321077
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 1068

Book Description
Widespread and increasing resistance to most available acaracides threatens both global livestock industries and public health. This necessitates better understanding of ticks and the diseases they transmit in the development of new control strategies. Ticks: Biology, Disease and Control is written by an international collection of experts and covers in-depth information on aspects of the biology of the ticks themselves, various veterinary and medical tick-borne pathogens, and aspects of traditional and potential new control methods. A valuable resource for graduate students, academic researchers and professionals, the book covers the whole gamut of ticks and tick-borne diseases from microsatellites to satellite imagery and from exploiting tick saliva for therapeutic drugs to developing drugs to control tick populations. It encompasses the variety of interconnected fields impinging on the economically important and biologically fascinating phenomenon of ticks, the diseases they transmit and methods of their control.

Physiology of Ticks

Physiology of Ticks PDF Author: Frederick D. Obenchain
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483162346
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 523

Book Description
Physiology of Ticks focuses on the unique (and probably the most vulnerable) features of tick physiology and the physiological aspects of tick interactions with their hosts. The mechanisms used by non-feeding ticks to maintain their water balance are examined, along with the salivary mechanisms used by feeding ixodid ticks for excreting the enormous excess volumes of water and salts taken in during blood sucking. This book is comprised of 13 chapters and begins with a description of the morphology, deposition, and components of the tick cuticle. The discussion then turns to humidity relationships and water balance of ticks, as well as the sensory basis of tick feeding behavior and the immunological basis of host resistance to ticks. Subsequent chapters explore blood digestion in ticks; tick reproduction, with emphasis on sperm development, cytogenetics, oogenesis, and oviposition; effects of insect hormones and their mimics on tick development and reproduction; and the mechanisms of tick pheromones. The final chapter deals with diapause and biological rhythms in ticks. This monograph will be of value to entomologists, physiologists, biologists, and practitioners of tropical science.

The Acari

The Acari PDF Author: Reinhart Schuster
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401131023
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 539

Book Description
During the Inaugural Meeting of the European Association of Acarol ogists (EURAAC), held in Amsterdam in 1987, it was decided that the holding of a Symposium at regular intervals should be a major objective. With this in view, it was agreed that Professor Reinhart Schuster, the senior editor, be invited to accept the Presidency of the Association and, arising from that Office, to organize the first Symposium in Austria in 1988. There was strong support for a main theme focused on a particular aspect of acarology. From these discussions there emerged the proposal that emphasis be placed on aspects of reproduction, development and life-history strategies of the Acari. These were topics in the forefront of the discipline with exciting developments of interest not only to acarologists but to a wider audience because of the light they cast on fundamental processes in physiology, ecology and evolutionary biology. The object then was to invite a small number of key workers to present extended papers related to the main theme. There were seven of these all of which appear in the book. The remaining 51 contributions were offered papers a number of which fit within the framework of the Symposium theme.

Ecdysone

Book Description
Ecdysone: From Metabolism to Regulation of Gene Expression presents papers from the Seventh Ecdysone Workshop held in Edinburgh, UK from March 31 to April 3, 1985. The book discusses the biosynthesis, distribution, and metabolism of ecdysteroids; the ecdysteroid action and hormone receptors; and the ecdysone inducible genes. The text also describes hormones and oogenesis; the interactions with other hormones, studies on other hormones, and practical applications of ecdysteroid studies.

Book Description
Acarology: Proceedings of the 10th International Congress is a timely overview of the current international research mites and ticks. The outcome of a conference of leading acarologists, it presents major reviews of all current areas of research including: *advances in acarine biodiversity and systematics. *human and livestock diseases transmitted by ticks and other parasitic mites. *interactions between mites and their food plants. *mites as biological control agents. *use of genetic markers in mite population studies. *mites as bioindicators. *ecology and biology of soil mites. *mite evolutionary ecology and reproduction. *advances in acarine diversity and systematics. The 90 papers in the book represent some of the best research from leading international researchers from over 50 countries, and helps to establish priorities for future research. All papers have been peer reviewed and edited. Acarology is a comprehensive and important addition to the world literature on mites, and is an essential addition to all acarological and entomological reference collections.
