" Early life experiences, preferred work environment, and perceived competence can influence women's career development and aspirations (Colaner & Rittenour, 2015; Gottfredson, 2005; Metz et al., 2009). Barriers such as unequal pay, discrimination, and stereotyping can also play a factor (Deemer et al., 2014; Eagly, 2007; Sa̹nchez & Lehnert, 2019). Despite making advances, women continue to be underrepresented in leadership positions. Research has shown that there is a prevalence of former women athletes that hold positions of power in their careers and that women gain physical and mental benefits from playing sports, along with a set of skills that can translate into their working roles (Lavallee 2005; Nair, 2015; Staurowsky et al., 2015). However, little research has examined women collegiate athletes and career development. Using Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR, Hill et al., 1997), this study examined the ways in which sport participation has contributed to women's career aspirations and can aid in overcoming barriers in the workplace. Nine former women collegiate athletes were interviewed, and five domains were identified including: leadership, barriers/challenges at work, personal attributes and experiences gained from sport, work-family balance, and factors that contribute to current leadership aspirations. Interestingly, all participants identified that playing a sport had a positive impact on their confidence. The results from this study suggest that former women collegiate athletes developed a number of useful skills, through sport, to help them navigate different barriers and challenges faced at work. Implications for psychologists and counselors, directions for future research, and limitations of the study are further discussed. Abstract The Social Cognitive Career Theory was applied to examine how the desire to coach or administrate are impacted by self-efficacy, occupational valence, perceived hindrance, and role model influence. This study was conducted to address the underrepresentation of females in collegiate sports leadership positions. The study examined if being coached by males or if males in leadership positions is preferred. Women coach less than half, (40.2%) of women0́9s sports and women account for 19.6% percent of administrators in college athletic departments. Hypothetically, the results of this study will support and enhance the NCAA college sports model by revealing quantitative data that provide a foundation for understanding the problems and identifying key factors important to the leadership development of female student-athletes. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, MANOVAs, and path analysis. Everhart and Chelladurai (1998) stated that female athletes preferred male coaches and that female athletes that had male coaches were more likely to perceive discrimination as a barrier. The study0́9s finding is that collegiate female student-athletes had a high perception of female coaches and female administrators and a preference for female coaches.

The barriers and challenges women confront in the sports industry, which represents a male-dominant field, have been well-documented in the sport management literature. However, there is a still lack of research on how women who aspire to work in sports industry perceive those barriers or what supports they receive as pursuing their desired careers. While the majority of research in the sport management discipline examined female sport management students' perceptions of sports careers, female student-athletes' unique experiences in managing the tasks of both academics and athletics would offer new insights into women's careers in sport. This study explored the relationship between the athletic identity and career maturity of women's basketball student-athletes. Differences in athletic identity and career maturity were also investigated based on a women's basketball student-athlete's level of competition, race, year in school, socioeconomic status, and professional athletic career aspirations. In order to examine the relationship between these variables, a convenience sample of 209 women's basketball student-athletes from NCAA Division I (n = 62), NCAA Division II (n = 40), NCAA Division III (n = 50), and NAIA (n = 57) institutions located in the southeastern region of the United States participated in the study. Participants completed the Career Maturity Inventory-Revised Attitude Scale, the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale, and a demographic questionnaire. From the analyses, it was found that for women's basketball student-athletes, stronger identification with the athletic role is associated with lower levels of career maturity. It was also found that NCAA Division I student-athletes had significantly higher levels of athletic identity and significantly lower levels of career maturity than Division II student-athletes. Likewise, student-athletes that planned to pursue a professional basketball career (n = 76) displayed significantly higher levels of athletic identity and significantly lower levels of career maturity than those that do not (n = 133). However, study results did not find any statistically significant differences in athletic identity or career maturity based on a women's basketball student-athlete's race, year in school, or socioeconomic status. Future research should explore an interaction of psychological variables that may affect the relationship of athletic identity and career maturity of women's basketball student-athletes as well as investigate the athletic identity and career maturity of female student-athletes from other sports where there is a potential to compete professionally.
