Book Description
Excerpt from More Haunted Houses of London In a narrow, squalid street, not far from Whiteheads Grove, stands a little house with a room, the door of which, once upon a time, would never keep shut. You might lock it, and put what you liked against it, but after a while you would find it open. Carpenters were called in and all sorts of expert opinion given, but the door still kept up its antics, and, in the end, it was generally recognised that the reason of its strange behaviour must be sought for in something outside the physical and quite apart from the natural. I believe many versions of the cause are in circulation, but the following is, I think, the most authentic. One wet August afternoon, a good many years ago, there arrived at this little house, near Whiteheads Grove, a poor, deformed, dwarfish creature named Anna Mikovitch. Whether a Pole, Russian, Bulgarian or Serbian, no one knew, and no one cared. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Some Haunted Houses: Of England Wales IN selecting a series of ghost stories for this volume I have taken the greatest care to make use of those only which are thoroughly well authenticated. The result of this discrimination has been that the majority of these accounts of psychic phenomena have been taken from the lips of eye-witnesses and transferred to manuscript in as nearly as possible the narrator's own language. First-hand narratives of unfamiliar hauntings, albeit they refer to the meaner class of houses, will, I think, be more welcome to the reader than the mere repetition of such hackneyed stories as those appertaining to Glamis Castle, the Tower of London, &c. In one other point, too, this work may be said to differ from others dealing with the same subject viz., it is compiled and written by a very keen psychic - one who has not only investigated (and lectured on) haunted houses, but has himself seen many occult manifestations. As there have been several libel cases quite recently in connection with the alleged haunting of houses, I have been obliged (save where it is stated to the contrary) to give fictitious names to both people and localities. Book Description
Excerpt from A Haunted House On our right stood the house which had attracted my attention, and though it was far back from the street, I could see, even in the twilight, that it was large and well built and was surrounded by what had once been a beautiful garden. It was closed, by door and by win dow, but there was no evidence of any great precautions against those who might desire to enter, and, indeed, entrance looked to be an easy thing enough. The gar den was overgrown with weeds and vines, and though an occasional rose-tree raised its hardy head above the tangle at its feet, it was plain that for many a year no careful hand had trained or pruned its thorny branches. In fact, the strange thing about the whole place was the air of total neglect which had at first struck my atten tion, and in this it was such a contrast to all that I saw of the rest of the village, that I turned at once to the man at my side for an explanation. He hesitated a mo ment before answering me, and then prefaced his answer with a slow shake of the head which showed me at once that something was amiss.
