Tearing Down the Lost Cause

Tearing Down the Lost Cause PDF Author: James Gill
Publisher: Univ. Press of Mississippi
ISBN: 1496833546
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 248

Book Description
In Tearing Down the Lost Cause: The Removal of New Orleans's Confederate Statues James Gill and Howard Hunter examine New Orleans’s complicated relationship with the history of the Confederacy pre– and post–Civil War. The authors open and close their manuscript with the dramatic removal of the city’s Confederate statues. On the eve of the Civil War, New Orleans was far more cosmopolitan than Southern, with its sizable population of immigrants, Northern-born businessmen, and white and Black Creoles. Ambivalent about secession and war, the city bore divided loyalties between the Confederacy and the Union. However, by 1880 New Orleans rivaled Richmond as a bastion of the Lost Cause. After Appomattox, a significant number of Confederate veterans moved into the city giving elites the backing to form a Confederate civic culture. While it’s fair to say that the three Confederate monuments and the white supremacist Liberty Monument all came out of this dangerous nostalgia, the authors argue that each monument embodies its own story and mirrors the city and the times. The Lee monument expressed the bereavement of veterans and a desire to reconcile with the North, though strictly on their own terms. The Davis monument articulated the will of the Ladies Confederate Memorial Association to solidify the Lost Cause and Southern patriotism. The Beauregard Monument honored a local hero, but also symbolized the waning of French New Orleans and rising Americanization. The Liberty Monument, throughout its history, represented white supremacy and the cruel hypocrisy of celebrating a past that never existed. While the book is a narrative of the rise and fall of the four monuments, it is also about a city engaging history. Gill and Hunter contextualize these statues rather than polarize, interviewing people who are on both sides including citizens, academics, public intellectuals, and former mayor Mitch Landrieu. Using the statues as a lens, the authors construct a compelling narrative that provides a larger cultural history of the city.

Erasing America

Erasing America PDF Author: James S. Robbins
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1621578399
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 354

Book Description
"A brilliant book based on a brilliant and true concept." - TUCKER CARLSON Remember America? There may come a time when no one will. There will be no monuments to American heroes, no stories that will praise them. The United States will have become a dark chapter in human history, best forgotten. In Erasing America: Destroying Our Future by Erasing Our Past (releasing August 21st), James Robbins reveals that the radical Left controls education, the media, and the Democratic party…. and they seek to demean, demolish, and relentlessly attack America’s past in order to control America’s present. This toxic movement has already brainwashed an entire generation and is rapidly changing the cultural, historical, and spiritual bonds of our nation. American exceptionalism, history, and patriotism are a magnificent legacy, Robbins warns, but to pass it on to our children, we must view the past with understanding, the present with gratitude, and the future with hope. Wondering if it’s really that bad? Here are some facts you’ll learn in Erasing America: At Yale, residential Calhoun College is being renamed after students complained about the pro-slavery sentiments of John C. Calhoun. In Massachusetts, Simmons College claims saying, “God bless you” is an “Islamophobic microaggression.” In Virginia, school districts seek to ban To Kill a Mockingbird and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn because parents complained about the racial slurs in the books. Across the country, Christmas songs and movies are labelled as racist and sexist – and banned. In California, a San Francisco school district wants to rename George Washington High School because our first president owned slaves. In Arkansas, a monument engraved with the Ten Commandments was smashed to smithereens by a protester in a Dodge Dart. And in parks and squares across the South, statues of confederate generals and soldiers are disappearing. Robbins wants you to understand the critical situation in America, and to use Erasing America to equip your fellow Americans against this Leftist propaganda – before it’s too late!

A Tunnel Too Far

A Tunnel Too Far PDF Author: Charles A. Turek
Publisher: Charles A. Turek dba Pagination Books
ISBN: 1463654103
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 348

Book Description
Deep under the bustling city, a dirty system of tunnels carries on the commerce of a booming economy. Living in this dark Hades by choice, a prideful young son of immigrants finds that his world is not what it seems to be. Inspired by some of the true facts and urban legends about those tunnels, this story is a tragedy about how we view ourselves and our place in society. The time is the very beginning of the Great Depression, and the place is in and around Chicago of that era. Electric streetcars still dodge horses, wagons and motorcars. The great railroads still operate steam-hauled trains into the city and serve its diverse population via fabled passenger stations. Prohibition is the law of the land, and crooks, criminals, and mobsters of all shapes and sizes are the law of the streets. Frank Cermak is a product of the ethnic neighborhoods, narrowly defined enclaves where narrow minds are common. He sits on the broad shoulders of the city, secure and smug, ready to grab his world by the tail and battle it to submission. The battlegrounds are the tunnels, streets, neighborhoods and canals of the great city, and the warriors are men and women like Frank, themselves caught in the battle without knowing which side they are on. Getting himself too deep into what he considers to be innocent mob activities, Frank is bent to the breaking point. With his stubborn pride ruined, his version of morality shaken, and his prejudices exposed, he must admit his defeat and suffer a horrible disgrace at the hands of cruel and ruthless men. Desperate, Frank struggles to right the world that he had figured all wrong.
