Oxidative Stress and Neuroprotection

Oxidative Stress and Neuroprotection PDF Author: S.H. Parvez
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3211333282
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 262

Book Description
This book deals with basic and clinical aspects of monoamine oxidase (MAO) subtypes A and B highlighting its importance in neurological and psychiatric diseases. Consequently the therapeutic actions of MAO-A and -B inhibitors in Parkinson’s disease (PK) and depression are the focus of several chapters. As MAO is the basis of the development of the "oxidative stress hypothesis" of PD, several chapters are devoted to iron and iron-induced oxidative stress in various experimental studies and clinical conditions. Based on these findings, new compounds have been developed which not only block MAO, but are in addition, either inhibitors of acetylcholine esterase or have iron chelating properties. The aspect of "preclinical" and "clinical" neuro protection as well as MAO neuroprotection are additional topics covered in this book. MAO, iron and neuroprotection are seen in the framework of general anti Parkinson’s therapy with chapters on levodopa, dopaminergic receptor agonists and clinical issues.

Book Description
Summarizes the recent scientific and clinical findings on a class of drugs that have been successfully used to treat Parkinson's disease, and now seem to have beneficial effects as well on the ageing process and in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. A brief introduction to the anatomical and pathophysiological basis of Parkinson's disease is followed by studies of the chemistry and pharmacology of MAO- B inhibitors, and reports of clinical experiences with the agents. Their chemical structures and pharmacological properties are compiled in an appendix. Should interest researchers and practitioners in neurology and other medical branches. MAO - The Mother of all Amine Oxidases

MAO - The Mother of all Amine Oxidases PDF Author: John P.M. Finberg
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3709164990
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 359

Book Description
Monoamine oxidase (MAO) is linked to psychiatric and neurological disorders, because inhibitors of the enzyme are used clinically for treatment of affective disorders and Parkinson’s disease. One of the interesting new aspects of MAO is the occurrence in the human population of deletions of genes coding for one or the other enzyme subtype (A or B). This leads to the possibility of a genetic basis for psychiatric disorders based on MAO. Subjects with deletions of type A or B, and combined deletions, have been described. In the first group of 6 papers in this book, the occurrence and characterization of these phenotypes, as well as the structure of MAO genes, is explored. Advances in the biochemistry of MAO subtypes and their physiological function and localization in brain and periphery is included. Other sections of the book deal with the neuroprotective action of MAO inhibitors and their pharmacology, especially the pharmacology of new MAO-B inhibitors.

Book Description
Every day veterinarians in practice are asked to treat petsexhibiting problem behaviors. In the last several yearspharmacologic treatments of behavior have made significant advancesand can serve as a critical part of therapy. Veterinary Pscyhopharmacology is a complete source of currentknowledge on the subject of pharmacologic behavior modificationthat veterinarians can turn to for the answers they need. Classification of disorders is eschewed in favor of in-depthexplanations of pharmacologic options in inducing behavior changes.Special emphasis is given to explaining the underlying mechanism ofpharmacologic agents used in therapy; thus, veterinarians will knownot only which drugs to prescribe but why they should be prescribedand how they work. Veterinary behaviorists, their students and residents, veterinarypractitioners of all levels, and veterinary students will find thisbook invaluable in providing information about their patients'behavior problems and the psychoactive medications that might helpthem.

Monoamine Oxidase

Monoamine Oxidase PDF Author: Hajime Yasuhara
Publisher: VSP
ISBN: 9789067641463
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 260

Book Description
Monoamine oxidase (MAO), a mitochondrial enzyme which metabolizes monoamines in both the central nervous system and peripheral tissues, plays an important role in the regulation of neuronal activities by controlling the concentrations of monoamines. During the past three decades the enzymological properties of MAO have been studied extensively. The most exciting and important advances in these studies have been the determination of the nucleotide sequence coding two forms of human MAO (MAO-A and MAO-B), and the involvement of MAO in potent dopaminergic neurotoxicity of MPTP, which had led to the acceleration of aetiological studies of Parkinson's disease. Other aspects of MAO studies have been the application of selective and safe MAO inhibitors in the treatment of depression and Parkinson's disease as well as the correlation between MAO and several psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders.

Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors

Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors PDF Author: Sushil K. Sharma
Publisher: Nova Science Publishers
ISBN: 9781634836005
Category : Monoamine oxidase
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
This book provides basic and applied knowledge about monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), their classification, and clinical application as neuroprotective agents and will be a valuable source of new knowledge for doctors, patients, medical students, teachers, researchers, and basic biomedical scientists interested in learning the appropriate clinical application of MAOIs without any misunderstanding for the prevention and/or treatment of neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders. The book will be of immediate interest to patients suffering from Parkinson's disease (PD), Alzheimer's disease (AD), post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD), panic disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorders (ADHD), and major depression. Physicians interested in learning more about MAOIs and their molecular and pharmacological mechanism of action will highly benefit from the book's clinically-interesting contents. In general, this book will be a valuable source of knowledge for the basic researcher, clinically useful for the physician, and therapeutically-beneficial for the patients. The book can also serve as a guide for Masters and Ph.D students interested in conducting research on MAOIs. Particularly, MD doctors, students, and professors will find this book interesting to enhance their basic knowledge about MAOIs and their potential benefits and adverse effects for the better clinical management of drug-resistant PD, AD, and MDDs. Furthermore, recent knowledge regarding the molecular mechanism of MAOIs-mediated protection at the cellular, molecular, and genetic level is thought-provoking and motivates the young scientists to augment research on developing novel drugs with minimum or no adverse effects. It is envisaged that future research on specific CB-targeted MAOIs will have superior pharmacogenomics profiles, enhanced margin of safety, maximum therapeutic index, and minimum or no adverse effects.'
