Capability as a Yardstick for Flexicurity
Author: Lehweß-Litzmann, René
Publisher: Universitätsverlag Göttingen
ISBN: 3863951638
Category : Job security
Languages : en
Pages : 309
Book Description
Flexicurity is a European policy agenda seeking to increase both flexibility and security in the labour-market. This book argues that it needs a revision: Although flexicurity is set out to change the way Europeans work and live, and even though it is being justified by workers’ needs, flexicurity lacks of a clear and democratically justified vision of society. Flexicurity is confronted here with Amartya Sen’s capability-approach, a paradigm of well-being evaluation. How is flexicurity related to a concept of employment as part of a way of life which people have reason to value? How capability-friendly are established flexicurity-indicators? It is thus shown how the capability-approach can be used in the field of labour-market and social policy.

Critical Legal Perspectives on Global Governance
Author: Gráinne de Búrca
Publisher: A&C Black
ISBN: 1782252886
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 926
Book Description
This book of essays, written in honour of Professor David Trubek, explores many of the themes which he has himself written about, most notably the emergence of a global critical discourse on law and its application to global governance. As law becomes ever more implicated in global governance and as processes related to and driven by globalisation transform legal systems at all levels, it is important that critical traditions in law adapt to the changing legal order and problématique. The book brings together critical scholars from the EU, and North and South America to explore the forms of law that are emerging in the global governance context, the processes and legal roles that have developed, and the critical discourses that have been formed. By looking at critical appraisals of law at the global, regional and national level, the links among them, and the normative implications of critical discourses, the book aims to show the complexity of law in today's world and demonstrate the value of critical legal thought for our understanding of issues of contemporary governance and regulation. Scholars from many countries contribute critical studies of global and regional institutions, explore the governance of labour and development policy in depth, and discuss the changing role of lawyers in global regulatory space.

This book aims to throw light upon the main changes in the Baltic states' labour markets, laying emphasis on the labour market flexibility, flexicurity and employment issues in the context of the EU eastward enlargement. The European labour markets of both old (EU-15) and new (EU-10) member states are facing big challenges in their current development. There are high expectations connected with improvement of competitiveness of European economy and enlargement of Euro area. Flexible labour markets help to maintain the expected quick economic growth and to adjust to possible asymmetric shocks of Euro area development. The particular significance of the labour market flexibility is also outlined by the Optimal Currency Area Theory (Mundell, 1961), which forms the theoretical framework for the EMU. At the same time a significant increase of labour market flexibility may due to possible increased employment and consequently also income insecurity causing weakening cohesion of a society. to rely on the European social model which stresses the importance of high social security, including also employment security. Labour Markets at a Crossroads
Author: Henrik Lindberg
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1443836133
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 295
Book Description
The European labour market models are at a crossroads. Almost all Western European countries have experienced a lack of job creation, productivity and growth for an extended period of time. There is a problem of unemployment overall, but most urgently for the young, for immigrants and for the disabled. There is a clear need for reform. This volume, Labour Markets at a Crossroads: Causes of Change, Challenges and Need to Reform, investigates a number of vital aspects of the European labour markets and the challenges they face. The chapters give new perspectives on how the different labour market models in Europe work, and what consequences they have. The contributing authors are academic scholars in economics, political science, sociology and economic history from a variety of European countries. The book is structured around three main themes: Flexicurity and Labour Market Dynamics Trade Unions and Industrial Action Wages and Bargaining A central conclusion made by the editors is that one of the main causes of the shortcomings of the European labour markets is the existence of what they call “corporative cartels.” Moreover, there are clear options for policy choice, both for legislators and the social partners themselves.
