Generation Friends

Generation Friends PDF Author: Saul Austerlitz
Publisher: Penguin
ISBN: 1524743364
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 370

Book Description
Praised by the New Yorker and New York magazine, Saul Austerlitz’s fascinating behind-the-scenes look at Friends, is, according to Newsweek, the “next best thing” to a cast reunion. In September 1994, six friends sat down in their favorite coffee shop and began bantering about sex, relationships, jobs, and just about everything else. A quarter of a century later, new fans are still finding their way into the lives of Rachel, Ross, Joey, Chandler, Monica, and Phoebe, and thanks to the show’s immensely talented creators, its intimate understanding of its youthful audience, and its reign during network television’s last moment of dominance, Friends has become the most influential and beloved show of its era. Friends has never gone on a break, and this is the story of how it all happened. Noted pop culture historian Saul Austerlitz utilizes exclusive interviews with creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman, executive producer Kevin Bright, director James Burrows, and many other producers, writers, and cast members to tell the story of Friends’ creation, its remarkable decade-long run, and its astonishing Netflix-fueled afterlife. Readers will go behind the scenes to hear from the people who were present as the show was developed and cast, written and filmed. There will be talk of trivia contests, prom videos, trips to London, Super Bowls, lesbian weddings, wildly popular hairstyles, superstar cameos, mad dashes to the airport, and million-dollar contracts. They’ll also discover surprising details—that Monica and Joey were the show’s original romantic couple, how Danielle Steel probably saved Jennifer Aniston’s career, and why Friends is still so popular that if it was a new show, its over-the-air broadcast reruns would be the ninth-highest-rated program on TV. The show that defined the 1990s has a legacy that has endured beyond anyone's wildest expectations. And in this hilarious, informative, and entertaining book, readers will now understand why.

Partisan Sex

Partisan Sex PDF Author: Fedwa Malti-Douglas
Publisher: Peter Lang
ISBN: 9781433105425
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 220

Book Description
Sex, politics, and the law characterized the Clinton era, which began with the emergence of Bill Clinton as a presidential candidate with a train of sex scandals and ended with the attacks of September 11, 2001. The Monica Lewinsky affair was the climax of the phenomenon, and the resulting scandal had far-reaching effects. Politics became the language and the means for battles over sex. Sex and politics became metaphors for each other as American society struggled to come to terms with its sexual and political anxieties. Partisan Sex: Bodies, Politics, and the Law in the Clinton Era explores the high-cultural anxieties of the left and the masculinity hang-ups of the right, the exploitation of romance imagery and hot sauce bottles, the obsessions with Hillary Clinton's breakfasts, and the rise of a society of voyeurs. -- Amazon.com.

Monica's War

Monica's War PDF Author: J. O. Horne
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781736346358
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 374

Book Description
Monica Beresford Wichfeld lived life on her terms and without apology. As a young woman, she socialized with some of the most famous people of her era-Noel Coward, Tallulah Bankhead, Coco Chanel-using her connections to build a business that would save her husband's familial estate from bankruptcy. Born in Great Britain, she married a Danish aristocrat and landowner and moved to his lavish estate on the island of Lolland, south of Copenhagen. Shortly after settling there, she began a nine-year affair with a neighbor (with the sanction of her husband) and raised three children. But Monica's most defiant act came when she was in her forties and the Nazis invaded her adopted homeland. A woman without fear, she made the estate available as a haven for the Resistance and as a drop point for the weapons and supplies meant to arm them for their fight. In 1944, at the age of fifty, she was betrayed by a fellow resistor-codename 'Jacob'--and was sentenced to death by hanging. When Danes protested, her sentence was commuted to life in prison and she died in a prison hospital just weeks before the war ended.

The Interrogation Rooms of the Korean War

The Interrogation Rooms of the Korean War PDF Author: Monica Kim
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 069121042X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 452

Book Description
Traditional histories of the Korean War have long focused on violations of the thirty-eighth parallel, the line drawn by American and Soviet officials in 1945 dividing the Korean peninsula. But The interrogation rooms of the Korean War presents an entirely new narrative, shifting the perspective from the boundaries of the battlefield to inside the interrogation room. Upending conventional notions of what we think of as geographies of military conflict, Monica Kim demonstrates how the Korean War evolved from a fight over territory to one over human interiority and the individual human subject, forging the template for the U.S. wars of intervention that would predominate during the latter half of the twentieth century and beyond. Kim looks at how, during the armistice negotiations, the United States and their allies proposed a new kind of interrogation room: one in which POWs could exercise their "free will" and choose which country they would go to after the ceasefire. The global controversy that erupted exposed how interrogation rooms had become a flashpoint for the struggles between the ambitions of empire and the demands for decolonization, as the aim of interrogation was to produce subjects who attested to a nation's right to govern. The complex web of interrogators and prisoners -- Japanese-American interrogators, Indian military personnel, Korean POWs and interrogators, and American POWs -- that Kim uncovers contradicts the simple story in U.S. popular memory of "brainwashing" during the Korean War
