Book Description
Excerpt from Money and Bimetallism: A Study of the Uses and Operations of Money and Credit; With a Critical Analysis of the Theories of Bimetallism, and a Study of Symmetallism and of the Tabular Standard of Value ยง1. Our money, at present, consists, mainly, of three kinds. (1) Gold money. - A piece of gold metal stamped or coined and given the denomination of a certain number of dollars, - five dollars, ten dollars, and twenty dollars, half-eagles, eagles, and double-eagles. (2) Paper money. - A piece of paper upon which is stamped or engraved a promise to pay a certain number of dollars, issued in the form of a promissory note by the Government or by a national bank. As this money is really a credit, it would be more proper to call it credit money, but the name of paper money has become so universal that it will be best to still adhere to it.
