Molecular Specialization and Symmetry in Membrane Function

Molecular Specialization and Symmetry in Membrane Function PDF Author: Arthur Kaskel Solomon
Publisher: Harvard University Press
ISBN: 9780674581791
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 366

Book Description
Biological membranes have been under intensive investigation for several decades. Despite very great experimental challenges, membranes are at last beginning to reveal their secrets. In this book, leading investigators of membrane structure and function report on progress in three related fields: specialization of membrane regions, asymmetry in transport properties, and differentiation of cell faces in epithelia. "Specialization at the Molecular Level" is the subject of the first section; in it, the authors consider such problems as the biogenesis of membranes, the geometry of protein-lipid relationships, and the physical properties of membrane receptor-sites. In the second section, "Asymmetry in Transport," such topics as the sodium-potassium pump, proton translocation, and anion transport are covered. The last section is entitled "Polar Faces in Epithelia" and deals with the complex properties of ion transport across the complex membrane environment maintained by surfaces such as the renal tubular epithelia.

Structure and Function of Membrane Proteins

Structure and Function of Membrane Proteins PDF Author: E. Quagliariello
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483162907
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 389

Book Description
Structure and Function of Membrane Proteins documents the proceedings of the International Symposium on Structure and Function of Membrane Proteins held in Selva di Fasano on May 23-26, 1983. This compilation makes it possible to obtain more information on the structure of membrane proteins, determining the structure in order to understand the function, and mechanism of action that is only understood by knowledge of the atomic structure. The gathering of data on the function of membrane proteins prior to knowledge of their structure is valuable for characterizing and defining the proteins. Once the structure is known, another stage of research will penetrate to the functional assignments of the structure. Other topics covered include the physical methods for the structure-function relationship; identification and mapping of sites in membrane proteins; and primary structure of transport proteins. Tertiary structure and molecular shape of membrane proteins and structure-function relationship in membrane proteins are also examined. This book is a good source of information for students and individuals conducting research on biochemistry, specifically on membrane proteins.

Molecular Neurobiology of the Olfactory System

Molecular Neurobiology of the Olfactory System PDF Author: F.L. Margolis
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461309891
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 388

Book Description
The sense of smell and the olfactory system have been a subject of intrinsic interest for millenia. Inquiry into the structure and function of the olfactory system is based on a long tradition that dates back at least to the ancient Greeks. The mechanistic basis for the sensitivity and selectivity of this chemosensory detection system has always posed a challenge and remained largely a mystery. Recently, there has been a renaissance of interest in it and especially in the application of contemporary techniques of biochemistry and cellular and molecular biology. In this volume, current research utilizing these ap proaches is discussed in depth by a group of scientists who are among the current leaders in the applications of these techniques to the olfactory system. These authors address a wide range of questions that bear directly on the olfactory system but have broader biological implications as well. The various chapters have been grouped into five broad subject areas that emphasize diverse but related questions. "Transduction and Ligand-Receptor Interactions" considers the biochemical bases of stimulus access, interaction, transduction, elimination, and information processing.

Transport and Inherited Disease

Transport and Inherited Disease PDF Author: C. Toothill
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400973160
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 384

Book Description
Many clinical problems of transport have been known for decades, par ticularly those disorders involving the liver and kidney. As a result of the dramatic increase in interest in transport at the membrane level the Society devoted its Seventeenth Symposium, held at Leeds during September 1979, to Transport and Inherited Disease, the result of that meeting forming the basis of this monograph. For the occasion over a hundred members and guests of the Society were joined by many invited speakers from Europe and the USA to discuss this rapidly developing field with special reference to the direct interests of the Society - in herited metabolic disease. The major theme of the meeting was opened with formal scientific presentations on membrane structure, synthesis and the regulation of epithelial transport. These were followed by discussions of specific prob lems of transport in brain, kidney and red blood cells. Almost all of these later lectures had clinical applications with cystic fibrosis and nephro genic diabetes insipidus featuring as examples of the common inherited diseases. The Hudson Memorial Lecture was delivered by Professor H. Bickel (Heidelberg). This outstanding review lecture on 'Phenylketonuri- past, present and future' is reproduced in the Journal of the Society - the Journal of Inherited Metabolic Disease (Volume 3 No.4, pp.123-132). xiii xiv PREFACE The members' papers (both oral and poster) are also being reprinted in various issues of the Journal (published by MTP Press Ltd., Lancaster, UK).

Book Description
This book provides in-depth presentations in membrane biology by specialists of international repute. The volumes examine world literature on recent advances in understanding the molecular struc-ture and properties of membranes, the role they play in cellular physiology and cell-cell interactions, and the alterations leading to abnormal cells. Illustrations, tables, and useful appendices com-plement the text. Those professionals actively working in the field of cell membrane investigations as well as biologists, biochemists, biophysicists, physicians, and academicians, will find this work beneficial.

Membrane Fluidity

Membrane Fluidity PDF Author: Morris Kates
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1468446673
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 698

Book Description
The aim of this book is to bring together in one volume the current research and thought on the concept of membrane fluidity as a biological phenomenon. The invited articles are intended to review recent develop ments in the areas of membrane research covered and to summarize the current concepts and theories in those areas. The authors have been given ample opportunity to present their thoughts and speculation on membrane fluidity and related phenomena in a more expanded form than is usually possible in reviews of this type. It is hoped that this approach will have a stimulating effect on research and theoretical development in the biomem brane field. The chapters in this book are arranged in three sections, the first of which covers physical studies of membrane fluidity and related phenomena on the molecular level. Included are chapters on intermolecular hydrogen bonding between membrane lipids, thermal analysis of membranes, appli cation of fluorescence and NMR spectrometry to the study of membrane fluidity, and the effect of drugs and other compounds on membrane stability and fluidity. The second section deals with the regulation of membrane fluidity in microorganisms, plants, and higher organisms by factors such as tem perature, fatty acid chain length, lipid desaturation, and polar head group structure.
