Book Description
For Moldova, the signing of the Association Agreement and the DCFTA with the European Union in 2014 was an act of strategic geopolitical significance. Of all the EU’s eastern neighbours, Moldova is objectively the most European on several counts, including sharing a common history, language, culture and border with EU member state Romania. These provide a positive foundation for a successful Agreement, notwithstanding the major political challenges that confront contemporary Moldova. The purpose of this Handbook is to make the complex political, economic and legal content of the Association Agreement readily understandable. This second edition, published two years into the Agreement’s implementation, adds new value, charting Moldova’s progress in putting the Agreement into effect. Two teams of researchers from leading independent think tanks, CEPS in Brussels and the Expert-Grup in Chişinău, collaborated on this project, with the support of the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida). This Handbook is one of a trilogy examining similar Association Agreements made by the EU with Ukraine and Georgia.

The Handbook is also up to date in analysing Moldova’s dramatic political swings between the recent pro-Russian and new pro-European presidencies. The Role of the European Union in Moldova's Transnistria Conflict

The Role of the European Union in Moldova's Transnistria Conflict PDF Author: Florian Küchler
Publisher: Soviet and Post-Soviet Politics and Society
ISBN:
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 168

Book Description
Since 1 January 2007, Moldova has been a direct neighbour of the European Union. Nonetheless, Moldova and the Russia-dominated geopolitics of the Black Sea region receive still relatively little attention in the West. This is all the more surprising as there remain a number of consequential political divisions and unresolved conflicts in the area. One of them is the Transnistria conflict in Moldova. This book is a contribution to the, so far, small research and policy agenda on Moldova, and includes findings of several research trips to Moldova, Transnistria and their neighbouring countries. At first, the study reassesses the Transnistria conflict. Contrary to widely held assumptions, this conflict is found to be mainly based on a clash of elites and geopolitical interests rather than on ethnic tensions. The second part of the book analyses the interests, official position, actual impact and potential role of the EU in Moldova's internal separatist conflict and its related external tensions with Russia. So far, the EU has had a limited involvement in the conflict resolution efforts and in the international relations of Moldova. This book concludes that it is becoming increasingly important and possible for the EU to get effectively involved in this region, but that the scope of EU activities in Moldova and Transnistria depends on the country's relations with, and on the actions in this area of, the United States and Russia. At its end, the study offers recommendations for future EU policies directed at Moldova.

Moldova

Moldova PDF Author: Marcin Kosienkowski
Publisher: Lexington Books
ISBN: 0739173928
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 300

Book Description
Moldova: Arena of International Influences brings international perspective to Moldova’s foreign relations since its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Eighteen chapters analyze the policy toward Moldova of selected international actors: Belarus, Bulgaria, China, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the European Union, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the unrecognized breakaway state of Transnistria. For these international actors, Moldova functions as an arena of influences—a sphere of intersecting interests, activities and, occasionally, competition. For the first time, leading experts and practitioners from many of the countries engaged in Moldova are brought together in a common language. The result is a detailed map of the international political landscape in Moldova, a chronicle of the past two decades, and a forecast of the country’s future.

A National Identity Crisis?

A National Identity Crisis? PDF Author: Sijbren de Jong
Publisher: The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies
ISBN: 9492102501
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 11

Book Description
Corruption and the perceived partiality of the justice system and state administration of Moldova have long frustrated efforts – both internal and external – to improve its domestic politics. It nevertheless remains an important partner for both the European Union and Russia, however its strategic positioning between these two powers have left its citizens stretched at times, even torn, in terms of national identity. Looking into recent domestic developments as well as the EU and Russia’s strategies towards Moldova in recent years, this study gives a brief overview of the European and Russian stakes held in Moldova and how its recent presidential election may change Moldova’s future geostrategic positioning. This study is part of the 2016-2017 HCSS StratMon.

EU Induced Institutional Change in Post-Soviet Space

EU Induced Institutional Change in Post-Soviet Space PDF Author: Ryhor Nizhnikau
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351337173
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 271

Book Description
This book analyses the role of the European Union in the process of institutional change in its Eastern neighbourhood and explains why EU policies arrive at contradictory outcomes at the sectoral level. Combining EU studies approaches with insights from the fields of new institutionalism, international development studies and transnationalisation, it explains how the EU policies contribute to rule persistence or lead to institutional change. Highlighting the importance of investigating how the policies of external intervention interact with domestic institutions, the book also provides a coherent presentation of the political and economic problems of Ukraine and Moldova and a comparative analysis in key areas at critical junctures of their development. This book will be of key interest to scholars and students of European Union politics and more broadly to International Relations, post-Soviet and Russian studies.

The Europeanisation of Moldova

The Europeanisation of Moldova PDF Author: Francesco Saverio Montesano
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Dniester Moldovan Republic
Languages : en
Pages : 28

Book Description
This Clingendael Report argues that, in order to strengthen its profile and foster better implementation of the Association Agreement, the European Union (EU) needs to update its policies towards Moldova by means of a pragmatic mix of strict conditionality and strategic patience. While recent developments in the EU's approach offer room for optimism, Moldova's economic and political woes, coupled with the geopolitical sensitivity of the protracted Transnistrian conflict, require better investment and synergy of resources between the EU and its member states. If properly handled, Moldova could serve as the bridgehead of a stronger European impact in the volatile Eastern neighbourhood. Given the window of opportunity currently offered by Russia, Moldova also offers a chance for the EU to test Russia's willingness to cooperate in a pragmatic way in the so-called 'shared neighbourhood'.
