Excerpt from Modus Tenendi, Cur Baron, Cum Visu Franci Plegii: A Reprint of the First Edition 1510; Together With Translations and an Introductory Note In the Introductory Note to the Society's Publication No. 8, "A Facsimile Reproduction of The Order of Keeping a Court Leet and Court Baron with the Charges appertaining to the same" (1650 Edition) a full list is given of the various Editions printed and published within the 140 years following the first appearance of the work in 1510. A print of the first Edition, whereof the present publication is a copy, is in the British Museum (Press mark C .4o, d55 (3) )and is believed to be the only one in existence at the present time. As frequently happens in legal works of that period, it is written partly in English and partly in Latin. In this publication those parts of it that are in Latin have been translated, a few of the old English words have been noted with their modern equivalents, and many printers errors corrected. The print in the British Museum is bound up with two other small works, so as to make one volume - a practice common in those days - and was in 1510 "Emprynted at London in Flete strete at ye sygne of the Sonne By me Wynkyn de Worde." Its authorship is unknown and, although it was wrongly ascribed to John Kitchen, that error has been definitely disposed of upon the grounds set forth in the Introductory Note above mentioned.
