The Northern North Atlantic

The Northern North Atlantic PDF Author: Priska Schäfer
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642568769
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 520

Book Description
The northern North Atlantic is one of the regions most sensitive to past and present global changes. This book integrates the results of an interdisciplinary project studying the properties of the Greenland-Iceland-Norwegian Seas and the processes of pelagic and benthic particle formation, particle transport, and deposition in the deep-sea sediments. Ice-related and biogeochemical processes have been investigated to decipher the spatial and temporal variability of the production and fate of organic carbon in this region. Isotopic stratigraphy, microfossil assemblages and paleotemperatures are combined to reconstruct paleoceanographic conditions and to model past climatic changes in the Late Quaternary. The Greenland-Iceland-Norwegian Seas can now be considered one of the best studied subbasins of the world`s oceans.

Sedimentation History in the Arctic Ocean and Subarctic Seas for the Last 130 kyr

Sedimentation History in the Arctic Ocean and Subarctic Seas for the Last 130 kyr PDF Author: M. A. Levitan
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642002889
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 402

Book Description
The book reflects the results of the study of sedimentation history, paleoclimatology, and paleoceanography of the Arctic and Subarctic during the last 130 ka. The main objects under consideration are marine basins of the West Subarctic (Iceland, Norwegian, and Greenland Seas), the Arctic Ocean (Barents, Pechora, Kara, Laptev, East Siberian, Chukchi Seas and deep-sea Arctic Ocean proper), East Subarctic (Bering and Okhotsk Seas). The modern environment and geological history of water- (ice-) sheds and marine basins have been studied for each region, using different sedimentological and geochemical proxies. Mainly results of the authors' own studies are represented, with special emphasis on glacial/interglacial variability and land-ocean interaction. The book is aimed at sedimentologists, quaternary and marine geologists, paleoclimatologists and paleoceanographers, as well as being of great interest to students in the related fields.

Material Fluxes on the Surface of the Earth

Material Fluxes on the Surface of the Earth PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309047455
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 185

Book Description
Understanding the ebb and flow of materials on the earth's surface is vital to comprehending environmental change. We need to differentiate between those that represent a progression of natural events from those that might be human induced. The latter can be managed by changing policies; the former probably cannot. This volume presents what researchers know and do not know about the base (or natural) level of surficial fluxes and their dynamics. Leading experts in the field offer a historical perspective on geofluxes and discuss the cycles of materials on the earth's surface, from weathering processes to the movement of material through the river system and oceans to their deposition. The committee sets research directions in five areas: shallow-water studies, mapping, rates of change, sample dating, andâ€"most criticalâ€"understanding whether human influence can exceed the natural variability in geoflux processes. This volume will be important reading for geophysical scientists, researchers, faculty, and students, as well as environmental policymakers.

Glacial Marine Sedimentation

Glacial Marine Sedimentation PDF Author: John B. Anderson
Publisher: Geological Society of America
ISBN: 9780813722610
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 244

Book Description
The papers in this collection are based on a symposium held at the 1988 annual meeting of the Geological Society of America, with the objective of identifying sedimentary criteria and facies models that can be used to characterize the glacial-climate setting of ancient sedimentary sequences. Includes papers on Antarctica, Alaska, and Ellesmere Island, and a brief literature review.

Shallow Geology and Geophysics of the Barents Sea

Shallow Geology and Geophysics of the Barents Sea PDF Author: Anders Elverhøi
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Barents Sea
Languages : en
Pages : 130

Book Description
Mainly based on investigations during the last 15 years. Gives main emphasis to characterization of the regional pattern of sediment composition and distribution. Includes sections on sea ice conditions, iceberg scouring and subsea permafrost. Also a short summary of sediments and sedimentary environments of fjords on the west coast of Svalbard.

Polar Oceanography

Polar Oceanography PDF Author: Walker O. Smith Jr.
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0080925952
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 372

Book Description
Polar Oceanography is an integrated synthesis of the biological, physical, geological, and chemical processes that occur in the polar oceans. The book represents the first modern interdisciplinary synthesis of this field.

Radioecology in Northern European Seas

Radioecology in Northern European Seas PDF Author: Dmitry G. Matishov
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3662096587
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 374

Book Description
This reference explores oceanographic and biological conditions involved in the transfer and accumulation of radionuclides in marine sediment and biota of the Northern European seas. Much of the content synthesizes decades of work by the Murmansk Marine Biological Institute. This forms the basis of a new methodological and theoretical framework describing radionuclide bioaccumulation by marine invertebrate and vertebrate animals, with special attention to marine food webs leading to humans.
