Modern Methods of Teaching

Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 288

Book Description
Excerpt from Modern Methods of Teaching: Language, Reading, Spelling The methods of teaching Language, Reading and Spelling as presented in this volume are the result of many years of experience of the author both as a class teacher and as a supervisor. They have in the main been subjected to the crucial test of the schoolroom by the teachers of the elementary school connected with the Milwaukee State Normal School. The author desires to acknowledge his obligations to the principal and the teachers of this school and to the teacher of Language Arts in the Normal School, for valuable suggestions which have been embodied in the book. In the presentation of the methods no attempt at elaborateness is made. Simplicity, directness and naturalness have been the keynotes the author has had in mind. It was thought best to reduce the theoretical discussion of method to as brief a compass as possible, in order to secure the necessary space for illustrative exercises by means of which principles of teaching and special methods of procedure could be exemplified in a practical way. The Technology of Teaching

The Technology of Teaching PDF Author: B. F. Skinner
Publisher: B. F. Skinner Foundation
ISBN: 099645392X
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 268

Book Description
On Parent's Day, in 1952, B. F. Skinner visited his daughter's fourth grade math class. As he watched the lesson, he became increasingly uncomfortable. Almost every principle of effective teaching that he had studied for more than 20 years was being violated in that classroom. Yet it was a typical class. The teacher showed how to solve the day's problems, then gave the students a worksheet to do. Some children began to work readily while others shifted uncomfortably in their chairs, or raised their hands for help. The teacher went from desk to desk, giving help and feedback. Skinner knew what was needed. Each student should be given a problem tailored precisely to his or her skill level, not to the class average, and every answer needed to be assessed immediately to determine the next step. The task was clearly impossible for one teacher. That afternoon, Skinner set to work on a teaching machine. Today's computers have made the mechanical machine obsolete, but the principles of how to design instruction in steps that lead from a basic level to competent performance are as valid today as they were in the 20th century. This book brings together Skinner's writings on education during the years he was most involved in improving education.

Normal Methods of Teaching

Normal Methods of Teaching PDF Author: Edward Brooks
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781331342427
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 512

Book Description
Excerpt from Normal Methods of Teaching: Containing a Brief Statement of the Principles and Methods of the Science and Art of Teaching, for the Use of Normal Classes and Private Students Preparing Themselves for Teachers Teaching is a Science and an Art. It embraces a system of truths that admit of scientific statement and may be woven together with the thread of philosophic principles. As such it may be taught like other sciences and arts, and may thus be presented in a book to be studied. The present volume is the result of an earnest attempt to give a scientific statement to the subject in a form that can be used in the training of teachers. Object. - The work is designed as a d104-Book on Teaching. It is a work to be studied and mastered by those who are preparing themselves to teach in our public schools. Several good books on the subject have been written from the standpoint of the profession for professional readers; this work is written from the standpoint of the class-room, for those who are being trained for the profession. Its-design is not so much to adorn the literature of the profession as to aid in building up the profession. The aim has been to prepare a work suitable for the use of the classes in our Normal Schools, - a work that can be studied and recited like a text-book on grammar or arithmetic. Origin. - The work grew up in the class-room. The matter was originally prepared for my own "teaching classes," and has been used by them for many years. Primarily, it was given orally to the classes, the pupils being required to write down only the leading definitions and principles and an outline of the discussions. Recently it became necessary to divide these classes and place them in charge of assistant teachers. For the use of these assistants the notes were expanded into a little treatise which the pupils were required to copy and recite. So inconvenient was this, and so much valuable time was lost, that I resolved to comply with the request of teachers and pupils and put the matter in a form for publication. Importance. - The need of such a text-book cannot be questioned. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
