En grafted into the life and permeating the thought of the centuries as is the power of its Central Figure, the one thing that impresses the student more than all else, as he endeavors to catch the spirit of New Testament teaching, is its thor oughly modern tone. The setting is local and Oriental, but the principles and their application are universal and human. The discourses here gathered together are an attempt to select from a ministry extending over a period of ten years, most of it in a single pulpit, the ruling ideas and efforts of that ministry to present a spherical view of the application of the Christian gospel to the whole of modern life, as we live it in America. Carrying out this purpose, I have made several excursions into the region of apostolic psychology; then again, I have tried to apply the teachings of Christ to the social and political life of our time, an experiment always fruitful of danger and misunderstanding, but none the less necessary for that. I have further outlined the relations of Christianity to our educational ideas and method, especially the place of the Bible in university instruction, following this with a literary criticism or two, in which I have made some observations on the literary and dramatic portraiture of gospel ideas. Then, too, I have added a number of dis courses on the spiritual life itself, as distinguished from the various modes of it which I have been describing. Excerpt from The Gospel of Matthew The aim of this commentary is to bring out the religious meaning and message of the New Testament writings. To do this, it is needful to explain what they originally meant for the communities to which they were addressed in the first century, and this involves literary and historical criticism otherwise, our reading becomes unintelligent. But the New Testament was the literature of the early church, written out of faith and for faith, and no study of it is intelligent unless this aim is kept in mind. It is literature written for a religious purpose. These are written that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.' This is the real object of the New Testament, that Christians might believe it better, in the light of contemporary' life with its intellectual and moral problems. So with any commentary upon it. Everything ought to be subordinated to the aim of elucidating the religious content, of showing how the faith was held in such and such a way by the first Christians, and of making clear what that faith was and is. The idea of the commentary arose from a repeated demand to have my New Testament translation explained; which accounts for the fact that this translation has been adopted as a convenient basis for the commentary. But the contri butors have been left free to take their own way. If they interpret the text differently, they have been at liberty to say so. Only, as a translation is in itself a partial com mentary, it has Often saved space to print the commentary and start from it. Excerpt from The Gospel in the Gospels The title of the present volume is intended to indicate that, while it aims to be an exposition of the whole Gospel of Jesus Christ, it does not purpose to be a whole or final exposition of that Gospel. It looks forward definitely to a further and fuller expression of it. We have here to do with the Gospel, not in its developed utterance as that of the New Testament or of the Church, but only so far as it is contained in our canonical Gospels or can by ourselves be deduced from them. My own position is that, while the Gospel as an act or fact is complete in Jesus Christ Himself, the rationale of its operation in human salvation is best interpreted and stated by St. Paul. My true objective point has therefore been the completer construction of the Gospel according to St. Paul, to be treated in a volume to follow the present one. That the epistles of St. Paul are an interpretation only, and not a transformation nor even an essential modification, of the Gospel of our Lord is - next to the hope of casting a single new ray of light upon the nature of the Gospel itself - the point which I have most at heart to prove in the end.
