Excerpt from An Anthology Of German Literature This book is designed to accompany an introductory study of the his tory of German literature. It is assumed that the history itself will be learned, so far as may be necessary, either from lectures or from some other book devoted to the subject. I have tried to make a good anthology for students who have learned to read the language of Goethe and Schiller with some facility, and would like to know something of the earlier periods, but have not studied, and may not care to study, Old and Middle German. On this account the selections in Part First are given in modern German translations. The original texts are omitted because space was very precious and the book was intended as an aid to literary rather than linguistic study. In making the selections my first principle was to give a good deal of the best rather than a little of everything. I wished to make friends for medieval German poetry, and it seemed to me that this could best be done by showing it in its strength and its beauty. So I have ignored much that might have had a historical or linguistic interest for the scholar, and have steadily applied the criterion of literary worth. Excerpt from German Literature Central europe, from the Adriatic to the Baltic, is occupied by a people, who, however divided politically into states, form socially, and as respects race and language, but one nation. The name Germans, which we assign to this great people, is that given to them by the Romans: the distinctive app ellation which they apply to themselves is Deutsch, a term derived from Teutones, by which they were generally known, as also by the name Goths, in the early history of Europe. A section of this Teutonic or Gothic people from Saxony settled in England, and hence an affinity between the speech of the English and their German ancestors. Some words in the language of the Germans are traced to the Sanscrit, one of the most ancient forms of speech, from which it is reasonable to conclude that the Teutones have an eastern origin. In its vast prolificness of words, however, in its independence of Greek and Latin, or any modern tongue, and what may be called its bold originality, the German language is exceedingly remark able. French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, are all broken dialects of the Latin; English is a compound of Latin and anglo-saxon, with modern draughts from Greek and French. The German is one and indivisible; excepting for its remote connection with the ancient Sanscrit, and for certain mediaeval improvements, it might be called, as it stands, a purely original tongue. It is of the lite rature - the written thoughts - of the great people who speak this language that we now propose to treat - a literature which has become one of the most varied and extensive in Europe. Excerpt from A Chronology and Practical Bibliography of Modern German Literature The Chronology and Bibliography here given were originally intended to supplement a brief outline of the history of German literature written for the texts of the Lake German Series; but as the material grew far beyond the limits of an appendix, it was thought best to rearrange and round out this material so as to form an independent work of more general value. Since the attempt was made to cover, in a small volume, the whole field of modern German literature, from Luther to the present day, anything like an exhaustive treatment was of course out of the question. In general, only such authors are included in the Bibliography as appear in the outline, such as must inevitably be mentioned in any rapid survey of modern German literature. The compiler is well aware that the selection here made is open to criticism at a great many points; but in the diļ¬icult task of choosing some two hundred names from the great roll of modern German authors, he has at least done his best to avoid caprice and to weigh absolute and historical values impartially. Excerpt from German Classics, Vol. 10 IN editing the present volume, which is the tent/z of my Series of German Classics, I have, in general, adhered to the principle I adopted in the beginning; that is, to interpret the classical writings of Germany - to the best Of my ability - in the manner in which Greek and Latin Classics have been annotated for the use Of English students. The favourable reception which has been ac corded to my editions by my colleagues in Great Britain and in other countries amply justifies my proceeding, and relieves me from the task of dilating on the desir ability, nay necessity, of a thorough interpretation of the modern German Classics. It is now universally conceded that it is only by a careful study of them that German can become both a moral and an intellectual medium for the training Of the mind. This process has enabled me to vindicate the poet indirectly against some charges brought forward by certain critics, who were unaware of all the sources at his command, and to what extent he considered it. It is so because I have confined myself to giving my own explanations, and have abstained from entering into personal controversies, which would have been unsuitable to a book like the present.
