Book Description
Excerpt from Modern Democracies, Vol. 1 of 2 The book is not meant to propound theories. Novelties are not possible in a subject the literature of which began with Plato and Aristotle and has been enriched by thousands of pens since their day. What I desire is, not to impress upon my readers views of my own, but to supply them with facts, and (so far as I can) with explanations of facts on which they can reflect and from which they can draw their own conclusions. Book Description
Excerpt from Democracy in America, Vol. 2 Men will not accept truth at the hands of their enemies, and truth is seldom offered to them by their friends: for this reason I have spoken it. I was persuaded that many would take upon themselves to announce the new blessings which the principle of equality promises to mankind, but that few would dare to point out from afar the dangers with which it threatens them. To those perils therefore I have turned my chief attention, and believing that I had discovered them clearly, I have not had the cowardice to leave them untold. I trust that my readers will find in this Second Part that impartiality which seems to have been remarked in the former work. Placed as I am in the midst of the conflicting opinions between which we are divided, I have endeavored to suppress within me for a time the favorable sympathies or the adverse emotions with which each of them inspires me. If those who read this book can find a single sentence intended to flatter any of the great parties which have agitated my country, or any of those petty factions which now harass and weaken it, let such readers raise their voices to accuse me. Book Description
Excerpt from Democracy and Liberty, Vol. 2 There is one other subject connected with religious liberty that is likely to occupy a large share in the attention Of the democracies of the future. It is the position and the aggressive policy Of the Catholic Church. Of all the judg ments Of the great thinkers Of the eighteenth century, none have been more signally falsified than those which they formed of the future Of the Catholic Church. With scarcely an exception, they believed that its sacerdotal, superstitious, intolerant, and ultramontane elements were silently fading away that it was taking more and more the character Of a purely moralising influence; and that all danger Of antago nism between it and the civil power had passed for ever. The delusion lasted for several years after the French Revolution, and it may be very clearly traced in the speeches and writings Of the chief advocates Of Catholic Emancipation. Many Of them lived to acknowledge their mistake. There is a characteristically cynical saying attributed to Lord Melbourne, that on that question all the d d fools in England predicted one set Of things, and all the sensible men in England another set, and that the d d fools proved perfectly right, and the sensible men perfectly wrong.' I have been told on excellent authority, that Macaulay once expressed in more decorous language a very similar view. I do not mean to take the white sheet, ' he is te ported to have said, ' for I acted honestly and conscientiously. Book Description
Philip, King of Macedon, was wont to boast that he could take any city into which he could drive an ass laden with gold. Many statesmen from Philip's time down to our own have spoken to the like effect. So long as private property exists, there will be rich men ready to corrupt, and other men, rich as well as poor, ready to he corrupted, for "the love of money is the root of all evil." This has been so under all forms of government alike. The House of Commons in the days when Walpole, looking round its benches, observed, "All these men have their price," was no worse than were most of the Jacobin leaders among the French revolutionaries... s-from Chapter LXIX: "The Money Power in Politics" This 1921 study of democracy in action-presented in two volumes-is not only an important examination of the state of the free world in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it's a vital reminder, as democracy continues to struggle to fruition around the globe, of history as an ongoing story. Volume II covers: the decline of legislatures the executive in a democracy democracy and foreign policy the judiciary the relation of central to local government the money power in politics democracy compared with other forms of government the future of democracy and democracy at work in the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. In 1921, William H. Taft said of Bryce, "no man in the world today is better fitted to discuss modern democracies... [His] encyclopedic knowledge of history, made vivid and practical by his actual observations and continued studies, give him a peculiar facility for discussing the present state of modern democracies." British historian VISCOUNT JAMES BRYCE (1838-1922) attended the University of Glasgow and Trinity College, Oxford. He is best known for his scholarship of the Holy Roman Empire. His popular works include Studies in History and Jurisprudence (1901) and Studies in Contemporary Biography (1903).
