Book Description
Excerpt from Modern Applications of Electricity, Vol. 1 of 2 In the present wholly revised edition, a large number of important alterations and additions have been made, with the view of giving an account of the numerous inventions which have during the last two years been made in practical electricity. The necessity of a second edition twelve months after the publication of the first clearly shows the general interest taken in the subject which is treated in this book; and, on the other hand, the necessity of dividing the book into two volumes must be ascribed to the enormous progress electrical appliances have lately made, and are making daily and hourly. As a practical illustration of this progress, I may mention that this preface has been set up in type by a composing machine which is worked by electricity. In the first volume a considerable number of electric generators and are lamps have been added to those given originally, and a better account of the incandescent lamps will, I trust, be likewise acceptable. Book Description
Excerpt from Electricity in the Service of Man, Vol. 1: A Popular and Practical Treatise on the Applications of Electricity to Modern Life; The History and Principles of Electrical Science Early History Of Magnetism - Nothing certain is known about the exact period when the compass was brought to Europe. We find in a piece of poetry called La Bible, composed by Guyot de Provins, dated 1190, some lines to the effect that sailors consulted the magnetic needle when bad weather set in. Jacques de Vitry, in his Historia Naturalis (1215 mentions the magnetic needle as being at that time no longer a novelty. The first European who took into account the declinations of the needle was probably Christopher Columbus. Its deflection from the due north had been previously attributed to the incorrect construction of the instrument. Variations in the deflection of the needle at the same place were first noticed by Henry Gellibrand in the year 1634. Applied Electricity for Practical Men (Classic Reprint)

Applied Electricity for Practical Men (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Arthur John Rowland

ISBN: 9780365320333

Book Description
Excerpt from Applied Electricity for Practical Men This volume has been in the process of making during twenty years' experience in teaching Applied Electricity to practical electrical workers; to men who expect to make direct application of the principles given them in the class room to their daily work with commercial circuits and machinery. It is written wholly from the standpoint of the one who puts up and operates electric circuits and apparatus. It does not touch problems of apparatus design. Pure theory is avoided, except as it has direct bearing upon practical matters. The principles stated and the explana tions of apparatus which are ofiered are only such as are necessary in order to present essential elements. They can be elaborated by the instructor as much as he may see fit. Every teacher understands the importance of numerical prob lems in order to make clear the principles and performance of apparatus. It is with this in mind that the set of problems found at the end of each chapter has been made up. Even though the computations demanded in the solution of many of the problems of this book are not required in everyday practical work, it is important to understand how a thing works; and unless one can make a computation regarding it and figure out a numerical result, no clear conceptions have been secured. Electricity Experimentally and Practically Applied

Electricity Experimentally and Practically Applied PDF Author: Sydney Whitmore Ashe

Book Description
Excerpt from Electricity Experimentally and Practically Applied: A Book for the Beginner and for the Practical Man, Principles, Experiments, Practical Applications and Problems Although a number of excellent works on practical electrical engineering are already in use, the author believes there is a place for a volume that will present the subject from an experimental standpoint. For many years the author has taught the subject of electrical engineering by means of experimental lectures and laboratory work to large numbers of practical men. Since these students have often lacked mathematical training, it has been nec essary to explain the subject-matter in a very simple way, showing, wherever possible, its practical features. The same method of presentation has been used in this text, and it is hoped that a much larger audience may thus be reached and benefited. This volume is particularly adapted to courses of instruction given to those engaged in actual electrical work; it should likewise prove useful as a text for high schools and for college laboratory courses. Book Description
Excerpt from Practical Electricity Seven years in the making, is the record for Practical Elec tricity. Some Of the material was written during the years from 1910 to 1913 for the American Electrician's Handbook, but it developed that the text thus prepared was not suitable for a handbook. Hence, it was stored away temporarily and has been incorporated in the present volume. Since June, 1916, a very considerable portion Of the author's time and effort has been devoted to this work. Practical Electricity was written for certain definite purposes. Primarily, its Object is to present the fundamental facts and theo ries relating to electricity and its present-day applications in a straight-forward, easily-understood way for study by any man, Of little mathematical training, who desires to acquire a working knowledge of the subject. If a man understands arithmetic he should be able to get the meat out of this book. Secondarily, the book was designed for university graduates who desire a medium whereby they can, with minimum efiort, review, refresh and re construct in line with modern theory and practice their concepts Of electric and magnetic phenomena. While it has not been found necessary to use the higher mathematics, the statements and ex planations are technically accurate.
