Dans le cadre de l'évaluation des grands projets d'infrastructure transports, les problèmes liés au choix des moyens de transports par l'usager revêtent une importance stratégique et particulière. A ce jour, en France, les décideurs ont souvent recours à des valeurs dites tutélaires (valeurs du temps fixées à priori) lors de l'estimation de la rentabilité socio-économique des projets en interurbain. Malgré tout, depuis quelques années des efforts importants ont été entrepris en matière de recueil de l'information concernant les déplacements à longue distance (enquêtes ménages structurelles, panels,) efforts qui constituent un préalable nécessaire mais non suffisant à une meilleure évaluation des projets. L'objet central de cette thèse vise en conséquence à mesurer l'influence sur le choix d'un mode de transport à longue distance de facteurs économiques tels que les différentiels de coûts monétaires, de temps de transport, d'accessibilité et ceci grâce à la mise en œuvre de modèles multinomiaux de choix discrets sur données individuelles. Pour un usager donné, dans un contexte déterminé, la probabilité de choix d'un moyen de transport particulier est égale à la probabilité que ce mode de transport procure un niveau d'utilité plus élevé que les modes de transports alternatifs. La spécification des modèles économétriques à tester repose donc, d'une part sur la forme choisie pour la partie déterministe de la fonction d'utilité et d'autre part sur la partie aléatoire. A partir des résultats de ces estimations individuelles, il appartient ensuite au concepteur de réfléchir aux problèmes d'agrégation de ces décisions micro-économiques, en vue de la mise en œuvre de prévisions de flux de voyageurs robustes sur des axes géographiques précis. On voit dès lors pour les décideurs publics, tout l'intérêt de disposer d'estimations rigoureuses et quantifiables de ces valeurs qui devraient permettre une meilleure évaluation des projets d'infrastructures.
