Urban Stormwater Management in the United States

Urban Stormwater Management in the United States PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309125391
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 611

Book Description
The rapid conversion of land to urban and suburban areas has profoundly altered how water flows during and following storm events, putting higher volumes of water and more pollutants into the nation's rivers, lakes, and estuaries. These changes have degraded water quality and habitat in virtually every urban stream system. The Clean Water Act regulatory framework for addressing sewage and industrial wastes is not well suited to the more difficult problem of stormwater discharges. This book calls for an entirely new permitting structure that would put authority and accountability for stormwater discharges at the municipal level. A number of additional actions, such as conserving natural areas, reducing hard surface cover (e.g., roads and parking lots), and retrofitting urban areas with features that hold and treat stormwater, are recommended.

Urban Runoff Quality Management

Urban Runoff Quality Management PDF Author: Water Environment Federation
Publisher: ASCE Publications
ISBN: 9781572780392
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 304

Book Description
This manual comprises a holistic view of urban runoff quality management. For the beginner, who has little previous exposure to urban runoff quality management, the manual covers the entire subject area from sources and effects of pollutants in urban runoff through the development of management plans and the design of controls. For the municipal stormwater management agency, guidance is given for developing a water quality management plan that takes into account receiving water use objectives, local climatology, regulation, financing and cost, and procedures for comparing various types of controls for suitability and cost effectiveness in a particular area. This guidance will also assist owners of large-scale urban development projects in cost-effectively and aesthetically integrating water quality control to the drainage plan. The manual is also directed to designers who desire a self-contained unit that discusses the design of specific quality controls for urban runoff.

Implementing a Stormwater Management Program

Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 188

Book Description
Implementing a Stormwater Management Program presents a four-step, common-sense approach that describes how to create and implement a successful stormwater management program. Guidelines, concepts, techniques, and thought-provoking questions are included for all phases of program development, including problem identification, program conception and creation, and final implementation. Discover the fundamental elements of policy creation, institutional planning, technical planning, financial planning, and public involvement and awareness. Find out how to implement the shell program and component parts such as operation and maintenance programs and capital improvement plans. Guidance in the legal aspects of stormwater programs and keys to success are also provided. The book will be an essential reference tool for environmental consultants, municipal engineers, regulatory officials, elected officials, and stormwater program managers.

Urban Stormwater Management Planning with Analytical Probabilistic Models

Urban Stormwater Management Planning with Analytical Probabilistic Models PDF Author: Barry J. Adams
Publisher: New York ; Toronto : J. Wiley
ISBN:
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 384

Book Description
Understanding how to properly manage urban stormwater is a critical concern to civil and environmental engineers the world over. Mismanagement of stormwater and urban runoff results in flooding, erosion, and water quality problems. In an effort to develop better management techniques, engineers have come to rely on computer simulation and advanced mathematical modeling techniques to help plan and predict water system performance. This important book outlines a new method that uses probability tools to model how stormwater behaves and interacts in a combined- or single-system municipal water system. Complete with sample problems and case studies illustrating how concepts really work, the book presents a cost-effective, easy-to-master approach to analytical modeling of stormwater management systems.

Review of the New York City Watershed Protection Program

Review of the New York City Watershed Protection Program PDF Author: National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309679702
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 423

Book Description
New York City's municipal water supply system provides about 1 billion gallons of drinking water a day to over 8.5 million people in New York City and about 1 million people living in nearby Westchester, Putnam, Ulster, and Orange counties. The combined water supply system includes 19 reservoirs and three controlled lakes with a total storage capacity of approximately 580 billion gallons. The city's Watershed Protection Program is intended to maintain and enhance the high quality of these surface water sources. Review of the New York City Watershed Protection Program assesses the efficacy and future of New York City's watershed management activities. The report identifies program areas that may require future change or action, including continued efforts to address turbidity and responding to changes in reservoir water quality as a result of climate change.
