To investigate the effects of HONO on smog pollution over the PRD-HK, comprehensive sources of HONO, including the heterogeneous formations on the ocean, urban, and vegetation surfaces, traffic emissions, new gaseous formation pathways, and recently proposed biological sources, were parameterized into WRF-Chem. The updated model was applied to study a severe multiple-day smog episode in August 2011 over PRD-HK. Our simulations suggested that the heterogeneous source of HONO from ground, ocean, and aerosol surfaces were the major contributor (~54%) to the observed HONO concentration in Hong Kong, followed by the biological source (~29%) and gaseous sources (~9%). The new HONO sources noticeably affect the regional oxidation capacity with an increase of 10-20% in OH radical and significantly enhanced the smog pollution with increases of 8-15%, 20-30%, and 10-15% in O3, nitrate, and total PM2.5, respectively, over the PRD-HK. The results clearly show that HONO plays an important role in photochemical smog pollution over the PRD-HK region and underscores the needs of implementations of comprehensive HONO formations into regional air quality models before utilizing them for refining ozone-control or PM2.5-control policies in the future.

Frequent haze events have been happening in the North China Plain (NCP), and the severity of these events has attracted massive attention from both the public and the scientific community. Extremely high aerosol loadings in these haze events significantly influence visibility, human health and climate. Thus, improving understanding of haze pollution is of great importance. Furthermore, air quality modeling remains challenging. This thesis elucidated the roles of meteorology, secondary aerosol formation, regional transport, and aerosol feedbacks in winter haze formation, clarified the impacts of emission changes and meteorology changes on PM2.5 concentrations, directly emphasized the importance of implementing pollution control strategies using assessments of health and climate effects, and improved model performance in simulating sulfate and PM2.5 via incorporating heterogeneous sulfate formation and assimilating surface PM2.5 concentrations. This thesis also provided some implications for policy makers. Priorities should be given to control SO2, NH3, and OC emissions, which can be achieved by promoting the shift from coal/biofuel to cleaner energy, and by changing animal feeding and housing ways. In addition, more attention to greenhouse gases and absorbing aerosols is still necessary since absorbing aerosols play important roles in aerosol feedbacks, aerosol feedbacks can aggravate haze pollution, and increases in temperature may increase aerosol concentrations. To protect the public health, it is of great importance to predict air pollution episodes, release alerts of incoming severe haze episodes, and take emergency measures to reduce pollution levels.

Jinan is one of the most polluted mega-cities in China, which is primarily due to the high levels of PM2.s. A quantitative understanding on the sources of PM2.s is a prerequisite to control the severe pollution. In this project, 103 PM2.s samples were collected and their chemical composition, including water-soluble ions, trace metals, organice carbon, elemental carbon and organice molecular markers, were measured. Mass closure anlysis reveals that OM (29%), sulphate (18%), nitrate (10%), ammonium (9%) and geological material (9%) are the major chemical components in PM2.s in Jinan. The data were fed to both PMF and CMB models for source apportionment and uncertainty analysis. PMF and CMB have identified secondary inorganic aerosol (41%; 31%), coal burning (10%; 16%), biomass burning (20%; 17%), vehicle emission (16%; 14%) and mineral dust (10%; 6%) as the major PM2.s sources in Jinan, respectively. CMB also identified the metallurgic plant (11 %) production as a potentially important source of Jinan's PM2.s. Furtherwork needs to be done including using other source identifications such as back trajectory, chemical transport model and remote sensing. Longer sampling periods is also recommended and establishing the local source profile is vital for the source apportionment in Jinan in the near future.
