Book Description
The Assembly, at its twenty-sixth session (23 November to 2 December 2009), adopted by resolution A.1023(26) the Code for the Construction and Equipment of Mobile Offshore Drilling Units, 2009 (2009 MODU Code), which had been developed following a thorough revision of the 1989 MODU Code adopted by resolution A.649(16). In adopting the 2009 MODU Code, the Assembly recalled in particular that, since the adoption of the 1989 MODU Code, the Organization had adopted a significant number of amendments to many of the regulations of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, 1974 (SOLAS) referenced in the Code, and also that the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) had adopted amendments to the Convention on International Civil Aviation which impacted on the provisions for helicopter facilities as contained in the Code. The 2009 MODU Code provides an international standard for MODUs of new construction which will facilitate their international movement and operation and ensure a level of safety for such units and for personnel on board, equivalent to that required by the 1974 SOLAS Convention and the Protocol of 1988 relating to the International Convention on Load Lines, 1966, for conventional ships engaged on international voyages. The 2009 MODU Code supersedes the 1989 MODU Code for mobile offshore drilling units, the keels of which are laid or which are at a similar stage of construction on or after 1 January 2012. For MODUs constructed before that date, the provisions of the 1989 MODU Code still apply.

The Offshore Drilling Industry and Rig Construction in the Gulf of Mexico

The Offshore Drilling Industry and Rig Construction in the Gulf of Mexico PDF Author: Mark J Kaiser
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1447151526
Category : Business & Economics

Pages : 259

Book Description
Jackups, semisubmersibles and drillships are the marine vessels used to drill offshore wells and are referred to collectively as mobile offshore drilling units (MODUs). MODUs are supplied through newbuild construction and operate throughout the world in highly competitive regional markets. The Offshore Drilling Industry and Rig Construction Market in the Gulf of Mexico examines the global MODU service and construction industry and describes the economic impacts of rig construction in the United States. The industrial organization and major players in the contract drilling and construction markets are described and categorized. Dayrates in the contract drilling market are evaluated and hypotheses regarding dayrate factors are tested. Models of contractor decision-making are developed, including a net-present value model of newbuilding investment and stacking decisions, and market capitalization models are derived. Jackup construction shipyards and processes are reviewed along with estimates of labor, equipment, and material cost in U.S. construction. Derivation of newbuild and replacement cost functions completes the treatise. The comprehensive and authoritative coverage of The Offshore Drilling Industry and Rig Construction Market in the Gulf of Mexico makes it an ideal reference for engineers, industry professionals, policy analysts, government regulators, academics and other readers wanting to learn more about this important and fascinating industry.

Offshore Pioneers: Brown & Root and the History of Offshore Oil and Gas

Offshore Pioneers: Brown & Root and the History of Offshore Oil and Gas PDF Author: Joseph A. Pratt

Pages : 322

Book Description
Fifty years ago, in November 1947, Brown & Root helped Kerr-McGee build the first out-of-sight-land offshore platform that produced oil. The date is widely celebrated as the birth of the modern offshore industry. In the years since this historic occasion, Brown & Root has continued to pioneer in the design and construction of offshore pipelines and platforms. Along with the rest of the offshore industry, the company has helped develop technology capable of finding and producing oil in deepwater and in harsh environments around the world. This history puts a human face on the process of technological change. Using the words of many of those who took part in Brown & Root's offshore activities, this book recounts their efforts to find practical ways to recover offshore oil. Building on lessons learned in the Gulf of Mexico before and after World War II, the company's personnel adapted offshore technologies to conditions encountered in Venezuela, the Middle East, Alaska, and other regions before becoming one of the first engineering and construction companies to confront the challenge of North Sea development in the 1960's.Through times of boom and bust in the oil industry, the search for effective technology had continued. The process has not always been smooth, but the results have been impressive. As we enter a new and exciting era in offshore technology, the history of the first fifty years of the industry provides a useful context for understanding current and future events.

Pages : 268

Book Description
Under pressure of more intensive and diverse uses, the legal principle of 'Freedom of Access' to marine resources is no longer sufficient to regulate man's activities in the marine environment. An analysis of the factors which must be considered in designing a workable regime for the future exploitation of the ocean was conducted. Oceanographic as well as political and economic factors are examined, and alternative solutions evaluated as to their ability to satisfy various interests and objective considerations. A recommended formula for the delimitation of coastal state jurisdiction in ocean space and a proposed structure for an International Ocean Authority to regulate activities in the area beyond national jurisdiction are advanced.
