Möbian Nights PDF Author: Sandor Goodhart
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 1501326953
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 346

Book Description
“I died at Auschwitz,” French writer Charlotte Delbo asserts, “and nobody knows it.” Möbian Nights: Reading Literature and Darkness develops a new understanding of literary reading: that in the wake of disasters like the Holocaust, death remains a premise of our experience rather than a future. Challenging customary “aesthetic” assumptions that we write in order not to die, Sandor Goodhart suggests (with Kafka) we write to die. Drawing upon analyses developed by Girard, Foucault, Blanchot, and Levinas (along with examples from Homer to Beckett), Möbian Nights proposes that all literature works “autobiographically”, which is to say, in the wake of disaster; with the credo “I died; therefore, I am”; and for which the language of topology (for example, the “Möbius strip”) offers a vocabulary for naming the “deep structure” of such literary, critical, and scriptural sacrificial and anti-sacrificial dynamics.

Does Religion Cause Violence?

Does Religion Cause Violence? PDF Author: Joel Hodge
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 1501333852
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 272

Book Description
One of the most pressing issues of our time is the outbreak of extremist violence and terrorism, done in the name of religion. This volume critically analyses the link made between religion and violence in contemporary theory and proposes that 'religion' does not have a special relation to violence in opposition to culture, ideology or nationalism. Rather, religion and violence must be understood with relation to fundamental anthropological and philosophical categories such as culture, desire, disaster and rivalry. Does Religion Cause Violence? explores contemporary instances of religious violence, such as Islamist terrorism and radicalization in its various political, economic, religious, military and technological dimensions, as well as the legitimacy and efficacy of modern cultural mechanisms to contain violence, such as nuclear deterrence. Including perspectives from experts in theology, philosophy, terrorism studies, and Islamic studies, this volume brings together the insights of René Girard, the premier theorist of violence in the 20th century, with the latest scholarship on religion and violence, particularly exploring the nature of extremist violence.

A World that was

A World that was PDF Author: Ronald Murray Berndt
Publisher: UBC Press
ISBN: 9780774804783
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 688

Book Description
This extraordinary book, written from material gathered over half a century ago, will almost certainly be the last fine-grained account of traditional Aboriginal life in settled south-eastern Australia. It recreates the world of the Yaraldi group of the Kukabrak or Narrinyeri people of the Lower Murray and Lakes region of South Australia. In 1939 Albert Karloan, a Yaraldi man, urged a young ethnologist, Ronald Berndt, to set up camp at Murray Bridge and to record the story of his people. Karloan and Pinkie Mack, a Yaraldi woman, possessed through personal experience, not merely through hearsay, an all but complete knowledge of traditional life. They were virtually the last custodians of that knowledge and they felt the burden of their unique situation. This book represents their concerted efforts to pass on the story to future generations. For Ronald and Catherine Berndt, this was their first fieldwork together in an illustrious joint career of almost fifty years. During long periods, principally until 1943, they laboured with pencil and paper to put it all down - a far cry from the recording techniques of today's oral historians. Their fieldnotes were worked into a rough draft of what would become, but not until recently, the finished manuscript. The book's range is encyclopaedic and engrossing - sometimes dramatic. It encompasses relations between and among individuals and clan groups, land tenure, kinship, the subsistence economy, trade, ceremony, councils, fighting and warfare, rites of passage from conception to death, myths, and beliefs and practices concerning healing and the supernatural. Not least, it is a record of the dramatic changes following European colonization. A World That Was is a unique contribution to Australia's cultural history. There is simply no comparable body of work, nor is there ever likely to be.

Book Description
"Do you ever think about the stars?" he asked, and I nodded gently because of course I did; I had enough time on my hands each night. "You ever think that maybe they think about us, too?"I smiled at the innocence in that because it was such a sweet thought. "I've never thought about that, no...what would they think?"He shrugged softly. "I don't know. Maybe they'd look at us the same way we look at them. They'd stare at the brightest ones, the ones that are the most visible, the ones that stand out and they'd think, 'that one's the best, or the most beautiful, or their favourite'..." he trailed off, chewing his lip again."And then there'd be the ones like us," I continued for him, squeezing his hand. "The ones who would search for the dark spaces in between, Nash. Because we're important, too.""But why would they think that? What could possibly be so special about the spaces in between the stars?""Because. Someday, deep in the future, those spaces will be lit up with new stars, brighter ones. And the spaces where stars once were will be empty. Things change, Nash."He glanced across at me and waited for me to go on."Just because things seem dark right now, doesn't mean that they always will be."
