Book Description
Yahweh's Breath is a unique Bible. In original Hebrew language it would be Yahweh's Nshamah meaning, 'Yahweh's puff or breath of divine inspiration'. It was written in the Literal form of the original languages of Hebrew and Greek and then matched with the New Strong's Exhausitve Concordance of the Bible, a thorough verbal index to the Holy Scriptures. It's one of a kind format puts the Sacred Name of our Father/Creator back into the text where it had been removed nearly 6,000 times by the scribes and translators throughout history. An outstanding feature also makes those hard to pronounce Biblical names easy as they were written in the original language of the script with the pronounciation following the name. Also, the meanings of some of the names follows the pronounciation. Using the wording from the Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible gives His Word a detailed 'come to life' picture in your mind. At times you can see the glistening green grass or smell the fragrant smoke of spices. If you listen carefully you can hear the vibrating trumpet ram's horns or taste the sticky gummy syrup of honey. You might even be able to feel with your finger the scar from the spikes in the hands and feet of the Messiah. Another feature of this version of His Word, the Bible, is that any added text by our Romanized translations that was not in the original text languages has been put back into its original form. Above all, this version makes reading and understanding His love letter to us about His Son easy and enjoyable.

The Joys of Hebrew

The Joys of Hebrew PDF Author: Lewis Glinert
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0190282177
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 304

Book Description
When do you say mazal tov? What is the English equivalent to the Talmudic expression Alya ve-kots ba ("a sheep's tail with a thorn in it")? What is a get, a golem, a kibbutz, a chalutz? What four plant species are waved during prayers on the harvest festival of Sukkot? You'll find answers to these questions and hundreds of others--all in clear English--in this remarkable collection of the best known, most loved Hebrew words and phrases in the English speaking world. From Acharon to Zohar, this informative and often humorous dictionary features over six hundred Hebrew words and expressions arranged in alphabetical order (the Roman alphabet is used throughout, as well as Hebrew head words). The first such guide to Hebrew, this volume is more than a mere lexicon--it is a jubilant celebration of Hebrew itself, a treasure trove of Jewish wit, wisdom, culture, and tradition. Lewis Glinert provides a concise definition of each entry, and then illustrates the word's usage with generous passages from the Bible and the Talmud, the prayers and the sayings of famous rabbis, the razor's edge of Jewish humor, excerpts from the work of Elie Wiesel, Adin Steinsaltz, S.Y. Agnon, Martin Buber, Naomi Shemer and other contemporary writers, folklore from all over the Jewish world, and colorful slices of modern Israeli life. There are words directly related to the practice of religion, such as amida (a prayer said standing, under one's breath, essentially a cry for help--for wisdom, health, peace, prosperity, and so forth) as well as the names of all the Jewish holy days and religious customs; words from everyday Jewish experience, such peot (the long sidecurls customarily worn by the Chasidim); many words familiar from their use in Israel, such as rega (literally, "one moment," it is the Israeli equivalent of Mexico's mañana) or miluim (army reserve service); and many traditional sayings, such as Tsarat rabim chatsi nechama ("A public woe is half a comfort"). In addition, Glinert provides at the back of the book an alphabetical list of familiar biblical names in English, Sephardi/Israeli Hebrew, and Ashkenazi Hebrew. This celebration of Hebrew language and culture is a joy to read and to use. Everyone from Bible students to collectors of Judaica, from Woody Allen fans to people planning a journey to the Holy Land, will be delighted by this informative volume.

Sacred Places Tell Tales

Sacred Places Tell Tales PDF Author: Yoram Meital
Publisher: University of Pennsylvania Press
ISBN: 1512825891
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 369

Book Description
Sacred Places Tell Tales is the previously untold history of Egyptian Jewry and the ways in which Cairo’s synagogues historically functioned as active institutions in the social lives of these Jews. Historian Yoram Meital interprets Cairo’s synagogues as exquisite storytellers. The synagogues still stand in Cairo, and they shed new light on the social, cultural, and political processes that Egyptian society and the Jews underwent from 1875 to the present. Studying old and new synagogues in the Egyptian capital, their locations, the items they stored, and the range of religious and nonreligious activities they hosted reveals the social heterogeneity and the diverse ways in which modern Jewish sociocultural identity was constructed within Cairo’s Sephardi, Ashkenazi, and Karaite communities. Meital contends that studying the congregations and the social services provided in synagogues reveals the local Jewish community’s customs, cultural preferences, socioeconomic gaps, and class divisions. Sacred Places Tell Tales narrates not only the past but also the unprecedented transformations that have occurred in recent years in Egypt. While only a handful of Jews live in Egypt, the preservation of Jewish heritage, first and foremost synagogues and cemeteries, enjoy a growing interest in public discourse and popular culture. This new desire to preserve Jewish heritage is inseparable from the ongoing public debate about Egyptian society, its characteristics, and its identity, past and present. By contextualizing Jewish heritage preservation in a longer Egyptian and Jewish history, Meital opens a window into one of the most significant political discussions dividing Egyptian society today.

Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 95

Book Description
The first night of Pesah (outside of Israel, the first two nights) is known as Lel Haseder. The word Seder refers to the orderly progression of fifteen steps that begins with Kadesh (sanctification of the day over wine), Urhats (washing the hands without a blessing), Karpas (eating less than a kazayit of this vegetable), etc., and culminates with Nirtsah (our prayer that after all the spiritual heights attained at the seder, we request to find favor in Hashem's eyes). The word Seder also hints to the fact that this is a different kind of progression.
