Valerga justifies missionary home videos as material folklore by emphasizing the fact that they are frequently created at moments of conjunction -- when two missionaries meet each other for the first time and begin spending all their time together -- and disjunction -- when those same missionaries have to leave each other after having become friends and want something concrete to memorialize their experiences together. He suggests that missionary videos focus on the mundane but repetitious aspects of missionary experiences that the missionary would otherwise be unable to explain. He identifies common themes in these videos, especially emphasizing food, spoofing, and apartment tours, and proposes that these common themes are all metaphors for safety and escape from the grueling world of proselytizing. He concludes by comparing missionary videos to Bascom's four functions of folklore -- education, release valve, social control, and reinforcement of values.
