En 1925, un prêtre, Joseph Cardijn, fonde la Joc en Belgique pour soutenir les jeunes ouvriers dans leur foi alors qu’ils sont confrontés à un monde économique moderne. Dès le début, Joseph Cardijn lui donne une vocation internationale. En France, la Joc démarre en 1927 et prend tout de suite une grande ampleur. A la célébration du 10e anniversaire en 1935 à Bruxelles assistent quelques jocistes du Congo belge ainsi que du Natal alors que la Joc venait juste de se créer en Grande-Bretagne. Parmi les près de 80 000 jocistes présents au 10e anniversaire célébré en France en 1937 au Parc des Princes, on peut remarquer également la présence de jocistes africains. La diffusion du jocisme en Afrique est dû à quelques rares missionnaires pionniers ayant rencontré la Joc en France. Ils l’ont proposé aux jeunes des villes, venus nombreux de la brousse à la suite de la croissance économique et du développement de l’urbanisation. Pour ces missionnaires, à temps nouveaux, mission nouvelle. Mais l’intégration de la Joc dans la pastorale missionnaire a été relativement difficile, les réticences ont été nombreuses, tant de la part de missionnaires que de la hiérarchie. Au début, il s’agit d’un mouvement de garçons du fait de la rareté du salariat féminin. La présente étude se concentre donc sur les jocistes masculins. Elle ne se borne pas uniquement aux colonies belge et française. Cet ouvrage donne à voir l’expansion du mouvement entre 1930 et 1950 sur l’ensemble du continent africain: la création et la vie des sections, la formation humaine et chrétienne des jeunes au travers des sessions d’études, des enquêtes et des temps de reprise spirituelle. À côté des missionnaires, des jocistes européens venus pour leur travail ou leur service militaire ont aidé au développement et à la vie des sections. Le but du mouvement est de faire surgir une élite destinée à être «le levain dans la pâte». L’expansion de la Joc africaine se remarque lors de la rencontre internationale qui célèbre le 25e anniversaire du mouvement à Bruxelles. Les dirigeants africains, conscients de leurs difficultés pour développer le mouvement, demandent l’aide des Joc européennes. 1950 est une date capitale dans l’histoire de la Joc africaine pour les dix années suivantes.

France, which has the largest Muslim minority community in Europe, has been in the news in recent years because of perceptions that Muslims have not integrated into French society. The Civilizing Mission in the Metropole explores the roots of these debates through an examination of the history of social welfare programs for Algerian migrants from the end of World War II until Algeria gained independence in 1962. After its colonization in 1830, Algeria fought a bloody war of decolonization against France, as France desperately fought to maintain control over its most prized imperial possession. In the midst of this violence, some 350,000 Algerians settled in France. This study examines the complex and often-contradictory goals of a welfare network that sought to provide services and monitor Algerian migrants' activities. Lyons particularly highlights family settlement and the central place Algerian women held in French efforts to transform the settled community. Lyons questions myths about Algerian immigration history and exposes numerous paradoxes surrounding the fraught relationship between France and Algeria—many of which echo in French debates about Muslims today.
