Un dispositif de mesure des contraintes mettant en uvre la diffraction des rayons x (methode des sinus carre psi) a ete mis au point et experimente sur divers materiaux. Il est constitue d'une chambre de diffraction permettant l'examen des echantillons in-situ a haute temperature. Le chauffage est assure directement par conduction electrique a travers l'echantillon ou son support. Un verin permet de soumettre les echantillons a des contraintes de traction pendant l'acquisition des diagrammes de diffraction. L'acquisition de donnees comprend un detecteur lineaire, un analyseur multicanaux et un ordinateur. Les modifications de l'angle psi pris par l'echantillon au cours des mesures sont pilotes automatiquement. Sur un alliage fecral (kanthal) on a mesure l'evolution des contraintes residuelles contenues au voisinage de la surface, entre 20 et 400c. Les constantes elastiques necessaires a cette mesure ont ete mesurees dans le meme intervalle de temperature au moyen d'une methode de calibration mettant en jeu la reponse du systeme a l'application de contraintes connues. Sur des echantillons de zircone partiellement stabilise a l'oxyde d'yttrium obtenus par projection plasma sur support de kanthal, on a mis en evidence l'endommagement occasionne par l'application de contraintes de traction dans l'intervalle de temperature 20 - 350c. Les contraintes de surface liees a l'oxydation de depots cvd de aln ont ete mesurees apres une etude preliminaire de la cinetique d'oxydation. Les mesures ont ete effectuees en atmosphere d'air a 1200c. L'alumine formee se trouve en compression pendant l'oxydation et en tension apres retour a la temperature ambiante. Le substrat d'aln est en tension a froid et en compression en debut d'oxydation.

Low-temperature X-ray diffraction (LTXRD) investigations offer many challenges to the diffractionist, not all of which are technical or scientific in nature. LTXRD studies can be frustrating: There are at least two reports of investigations ruined by the loss of crystals (grown with extreme difficulty) because of the widespread power failure and blackout in the northeastern United States in late 1965. LTXRD studies can cause discomfort: In several instances, "low temperatures" have been attained by opening all the windows in the X-ray laboratory. LTXRD studies can be dangerous: It was once reported that a crys tal was lost because a laboratory assistant fell down a flight of stairs and lay unconscious for about an hour on his way to refilling a liquid-nitrogen (LN2 ) dewar. This last report indicated the disposition of the crystal but not that of the laboratory assistant. However, in general, the results of low-temperature X-ray diffraction investigations cannot be obtained in any other manner, and one is well compensated for the effort expended in constructing and maintaining a low-temperature system. Crystal-structure analyses of solidified liquids and gases, phase transformation investigations, accurate crystal-structure analy ses and electron-density maps, thermal expansion measurements, and defect structure studies are a few of the many important applications of LTXRD.
