Book Description
Excerpt from Miscellaneous Essays and Reviews, Vol. 1 of 2 The Essays and Reviews in this volume are pub lished in this form at the suggestion of others. They have been revised and corrected with such care as I could bestow upon them by having them read to me. Most of them were received favourably at the time when they were first published; and now, after the lapse of many years since they were first presented to the public, they have accomplished a purpose which was never contemplated at the time when they were written - by furnishing occupation when unable, by an affiictive dispensation of Providence, to read or write. I would hepe, however, that they may subserve a higher end than this, and that they may do something to diffuse and perpetuate correct sentiments on the various points which are discussed. Book Description
Excerpt from Essays and Reviews, Vol. 1 of 2 IT is impossible to cast even a careless glance over the literature of the last thirty years, without perceiving the prominent station occupied by critics, reviewers and essayists. Criticism, in the old days of Monthly Reviews and Gentlemen's Magazines, was quite an humble occu pation, and was chiefly monopolized by the barren rascals of letters, who scribbled, sinned and starved, in attics and cellars; but it has since been almost exalted into a creative art, and numbers among its professors some of the most accomplished writers of the age. Dennis, Rhymer, Winstanley, Theophilus Cibber, Grif fiths, and other eminent hands, as well as the name less contributors to defunct periodicals, have departed, body and soul, and left not a wreck behind; and their places have been supplied by such men as Coleridge. Book Description
Excerpt from Critical and Miscellaneous Essays, Vol. 1 Paradise Lost without suspecting him of the former; nor do we think that any reader, acquainted with the history of his life, ought to be much startled at the latter. The opinions which he has expressed respecting the nature of the Deity, the eternity of matter, and the observation of the Sabbath, might, we think, have caused more just surprise. Book Description
Excerpt from Miscellanea, Vol. 1 of 2: Comprising Reviews, Lectures, and Essays, on Historical, Theological, and Miscellaneous Subjects; Historical The Introductory Address refers to the state of things which existed in this Country in the Springr and Summer of 1855, while the storm of persecution was brewing against the Church; and though the popular excitement against the Catholics has happily, to a great extent, sine passed away, or at least been greatly calmed down, and has been suc ceeded by more just and liberal sentiments, yet it has been thought well to preserve the Address in the present edition, with some modifications, partly as an historical remembrancer of Old-time prejudice, and partly because it treats of subjects which are of more than passing Interest, and which may again come up, should another attempt be made to put down the Church by popular clamor and unreasoning bigotry. A feeble effort of the kind was made a few months ago, but it seems to have awakened no echo in the popular mind, which can seldom be a second time deceived in the same direction. Book Description
Excerpt from Essays and Miscellaneous Writings, Vol. 1 Facts, and their connection with a man's life, may be recorded with less fear of mistake and prei udice. Their published writings are likely to be the safest records of the minds of most men; certainly these are the medium chosen by themselves, and the utterances which they have most deliberately sanctioned; but to those who have the indescribable image of the real character in their own hearts and memories, even the facts, the published writings and the actions, may fail to give any true idea of the unconscious charm or reality of the individual mind. Book Description
Excerpt from Critical and Miscellaneous Essays, Vol. 1 of 7: Collected and Republished; First Time, 1839; Final, 1869 Except by name, Jean Paul Friedrich Richter is little known out of Germany. The only thing connected with him, we think, that has reached this country, is his saying, imported by Ma dame de Stael, and thankfully pocketed by most newspaper critics Providence has given to the French the empire of the land, to the English that of the sea, to the Germans that of - the air!' Of this last element, indeed, his own genius might easily seem to have been a denizen; so fantastic, many coloured, far-grasping, everyway perplexed and extraordinary is his mode of writing. To translate him properly is next to impossible; nay, a dictionary Of his works has actually been in part published for the use of German readers These things have restricted his sphere Of action, and may long restrict it, to his own country: but there, in return, he is a favourite of the first class studied through all his intricacies with trustful ad miration, and a love which tolerates much. During the last forty years, he has been continually before the public, in various capacities, and growing generally in esteem with all ranks of critics till, at length, his gainsayers have either been silenced or convinced; and Jean Paul, at first reckoned half-mad, has long ago vindicated his singularities to nearly universal satis faction, and now combines popularity with real depth of endow ment, in perhaps a greater degree than any other writer; being second in the latter point to scarcely more than one of his con temporaries, and in the former second to none. Book Description
Excerpt from Critical and Miscellaneous Essays, Vol. 1 of 3 How beautiful are all the subdivisions of time diversifying the dream of human life, as it glides away between earth and heaven! And why should moralists mourn over that mutability that gives the chief charm to all that passes so transitorily before our eyes, leaving image upon image fairer and dearer far than even the realities, still visible, and it may be for ever, in the waters of memory sleeping within the heart? Memory never awakes but along with imagination, and therefore it is "That she can give us back the dead, Even in the loveliest looks they wore!" The years, the months, the weeks, the days, the nights, the hours, the minutes, the moments, each is in itself a different living, and peopled, and haunted world. One life is a thousand lives, and each individual, as he fully renews the past, reappears in a thousand characters, yet all of them bearing a mysterious identity not to be misunderstood, and all of them, while every passion has been shifting and dying away, and reascending into power, still under the dominion of the same unchanging conscience, that feels and knows that it is from God. Book Description
Excerpt from Essays and Criticisms, Vol. 1 of 2 I know but three modes of living in human society. Every man must either be a beggar, a thief, or a paid State-functionary. The 'man of property' is but a first-class functionary of the kind. What is commonly spoken of as 'his private fortune' is really nothing else than the wages paid him by society for distributing to others, through the expenses of his daily life, a large share of his goods.' These words are not, as might be supposed, the words of some orator of the time when the revolutionary movement was at its zenith. They were spoken by Mirabeau on the 10th of August 1789, and may serve to show how early subversive ideas had gained currency - largely through the philanthropy of those who were the first to suffer from them. The fashionable pessimism of our day might seek to justify itself by appealing to the irony of human life even more than to its absolute pains. There is a deep pathos in evils which result from benevolent actions inspired by what appear to be the best-founded hopes.
