Book Description
There is magic at the heart of the universe. We live our lives consciously or unconsciously searching for this magic even when it seems to forever elude us. It is as close to us as our own heartbeat, yet we have lost the way to our hearts. Following this spark of magic is the simplest of all things, yet we have created around it so many rules and conditions that it seems impossible to achieve this journey. There is a rhythm to all things. I have spent a lifetime in orbit around the most beautiful of men, one who became known as Issa, Son of the Sun. Although my story could not exist without him, it is also true that his story could not exist without me, for together we were meant to discover this magic at the heart of the universe, and bring it to the world. How can I ever forget the first time I laid eyes on him, when he slipped into my heart like a moth entering the candle’s flame. This is when the wild power of magic entered into me and made its home there, although of course it had always been there, since the Great Mother is the source of this magic. I have shared with you in an earlier manuscript his story, his travels and adventures, his struggles and temptations, his apprenticeship with a lineage of immortals, his journey back to the land of his birth where he was crucified on a Roman cross before making his escape and returning to the land of Kashmir. Now it is time to share my own.

Science and Technology Education Promoting Wellbeing for Individuals, Societies and Environments
Author: Larry Bencze
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319555057
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 692
Book Description
This edited volume provides theoretical and practical resources relating to the ‘STEPWISE’ curricular and instructional framework. ‘STEPWISE’ is the acronym for Science & Technology Education Promoting Wellbeing for Individuals, Societies & Environments. It is a framework for organizing teaching and learning domains in ways that prioritize personal and social actions to address ‘critical socioscientific issues’ — that is, controversial decisions by powerful individuals/groups about science and technology (and related fields) that may adversely affect individuals, societies and/or environments. The book contains chapters written by and/or with teachers who have used STEPWISE to guide their instructional practices, as well as chapters written by education scholars who have used a range of theoretical lenses to analyze and evaluate STEPWISE — and, in several cases, described ways in which it relates to (or could relate to) their practices and/or ways in which the framework might logically be amended. Overall, this book offers educators, policy makers and others with resources useful for arranging science and technology education in ways that may assist societies in addressing significant potential personal, social and/or environmental problems — such as dramatic climate change, preventable human diseases, species losses, and social injustices — associated with fields of science and technology.

Crime, Procedure and Evidence in a Comparative and International Context
Author: John D Jackson
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1847314627
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 450
Book Description
This book aims to honour the work of Professor Mirjan Damaška, Sterling Professor of Law at Yale Law School and a prominent authority for many years in the fields of comparative law, procedural law, evidence, international criminal law and Continental legal history. Professor Damaška 's work is renowned for providing new frameworks for understanding different legal traditions. To celebrate the depth and richness of his work and discuss its implications for the future, the editors have brought together an impressive range of leading scholars from different jurisdictions in the fields of comparative and international law, evidence and criminal law and procedure. Using Professor Damaška's work as a backdrop, the essays make a substantial contribution to the development of comparative law, procedure and evidence. After an introduction by the editors and a tribute by Harold Koh, Dean of Yale Law School, the book is divided into four parts. The first part considers contemporary trends in national criminal procedure, examining cross-fertilisation and the extent to which these trends are resulting in converging practices across national jurisdictions. The second part explores the epistemological environment of rules of evidence and procedure. The third part analyses human rights standards and the phenomenon of hybridisation in transnational and international criminal law. The final part of the book assesses Professor Damaška 's contribution to comparative law and the challenges faced by comparative law in the twenty first century.

Evidence Law Adrift
Author: Mirjan R. Damaška
Publisher: Berghahn Books
ISBN: 9780300069372
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 182
Book Description
In this important book, a distinguished legal scholar examines how the legal culture and institutions in Anglo-American countries affect the way in which evidence is gathered, sifted, and presented to the courts. Mirjan Damaska focuses on the significance of the divided tribunal (between judge and jury), the concentrated character of trials ("day-in-court" justice), and the prominent role of the parties in adjudication (the adversary system). Throughout he contrasts the Anglo-American system with civil law justice, where lay fact finders sit with professional judges in unified tribunals, proceedings are episodic rather than concentrated, and the parties have fewer responsibilities than in the common law tradition.

Jurisprudence of International Criminal Justice
Author: Farhad Malekian
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1443863238
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 808
Book Description
Introduction written by Professor Benjamin B Ferencz This challenging volume examines the jurisprudence of international criminal justice from various points of view. The philosophy of justice may vary from time to time and from nation to nation, depending on prevailing attitudes towards the substantive rules which deal, in one way or another, with cultural norms. In the national and international area, the principles of criminal justice have a key role in examining the scope of the most serious violations of international criminal law. It is on the basis of appropriate judgment that these principles may be accumulated and achieved for the future conduct of man. This volume, therefore, examines the principles and dimensions of the constitutions of various international criminal tribunals/courts, with particular focus on the Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC). As such, the volume offers a comprehensive evaluation of the rule of law and criminal justice and their legal tasks within the complementarity system of international criminal jurisprudence. The volume emphasises the prosecution and punishment of all those who may successfully escape from the proceedings of national and international criminal courts because of their juridical, political, religious, economic or military power. It demands the implementation of international law of jus cogens. The provisions of the Statute should not be deduced in contradiction to the norms from which no derogation is possible, such as prohibitions governing crimes against humanity, torture, apartheid, rape, war crimes, genocide and aggression. If the value of the task of the Court is to be realised by the majority of states in the international community, the cycle of impunity has to be abolished in the case of all states, including the five permanent members of the Security Council of the United Nations.
