Book Description
Poetry. Amiri Baraka calls MIRAGE "A fine book--important on painting." Basil King attended Black Mountain College as a teenager in the 1950s, and completed his apprenticeship as an abstract expressionist painter in San Francisco and New York. Since that time, his art has taken a different turn, reaching through abstraction back to surrealism and forward into a new approach to the figure. Although he did not begin to write regularly until 1986, an involvement with poetry has always been part of his life, first in doing art to accompany poems in books and magazines, later as a book artist, now as a poet/painter. Among his many books, THE EARTH SUITE by Carl Rakowsi, with drawings by Basil King, is available from SPD.

Pages : 75

Book Description
"Between the discovery that there is a design which only his poetry enables him to find as he confronts the world and the discovery that such a design is a snare, merely a means of keeping him from further discernment, Michael Rosen is wedged, is productively pinioned, [ should say, for it is just this pressure--of meaning discerned on one hand and of meaning distrusted on the other--which makes the tension of these poems, a new version of the old wars between mind and body, memory and hope, self and surround. How tender and inclusive are Rosen's preoccupations, and how disabused his conclusions! One reads these playful, stricken poems with wonder--how will such ventures conclude, or even persist? What will happen next? Here is a poet who persuades us, as the saying goes, to stay tuned."--Richard Howard Originally published in 1985. Book Description
Excerpt from Mirage Poems The majority of the poems comprising this volume had been written before I had a definite conception of the true nature of art. This, of course, can in no way affect their value, and I only mention it with the intention of leading up to another matter which I consider to be of real importance to everyone who has attained to years of discretion. These years are in many ways less delightful than those spent in the perpetual wonderland of youth. But in others they are greatly more interesting. Double Mirage

Double Mirage PDF Author: Dan Goodlett
Publisher:

Pages : 144

Book Description
What are the origins of consciousness and thought? Perhaps we will never know, but the mystery is worth pursuing. One simple question, many answers, answers that lead to community and culture, and also lead to war, poverty, and strife. Out of these questions comes our common dilemma - we have no idea what reality is, but we all want the answer, so we make up broken stories from our observations, and then we act on them, right or wrong. Through the realization of our dilemma, we can find compassion, when we see that the I and other are just broken pieces of a single self. Poet and peace activist, Dan Edward Goodlett, chronicles his experiences with poetry and memoir. Like many of his generation, Dan found himself entangled with the predicament of the Vietnam War. To go, or not to go. A profound conviction that "thou shalt not kill" prevailed and led to a trip to Canada, and he found himself in jail, in solitary confinement, on his return to the U.S. He began writing poetry in his teens, and an abundance of what he wrote was about his relationship to "God," and his desire for a peaceful and compassionate world. This book is about his explorations within, it is a deeply passionate view of the world of consciousness as seen by scientists, Christians, Buddhists, artists, and anyone else curious enough to examine their existence. Solitary confinement turned out to be Dan's mountain top, instrumental in the formation of his vision.
